Missouri Men’s Golf Triumphs at the 2025 Tiger Intercollegiate: A Season to Remember

The University of Missouri men’s golf team has kicked off the 2024-25 season with a spectacular victory at their very own Tiger Intercollegiate. This coveted title not only signifies a robust start to their campaign but also marks a proud moment for the team and its supporters.

A Historic Win for Mattias Varjun

In a performance that will be etched in the annals of collegiate golf, graduate student Mattias Varjun clinched his first collegiate individual title. With an impressive score of four-under (70-70-66), Varjun prevailed by a commanding four strokes. This victory is particularly significant, occurring during his 42nd career tournament, making it a milestone achievement for the talented athlete.

Team Glory: Mizzou Stands Tall

The Missouri Tigers showcased their prowess on the course, ultimately finishing at even par and outperforming runner-up Saint Mary’s by eight strokes. This victory represents a remarkable turnaround for Mizzou, complementing their past success. The last team title was secured at the 2023 Chicago Highlands, where they tied for first place with Wake Forest. The last outright championship came in 2022 at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate.

Head Coach Glen Millican expressed his elation following the triumph. “It was a great win all the way around," he remarked. "Seeing the guys win as a team and Mattias as an individual was very rewarding. It feels like we are gaining momentum with every round," highlighting the progression the team has made throughout the season.

Strategic Play and Dominance on the Course

The Tigers faced a competitive field, trailing by a stroke to No. 26 UNLV after the first round and one behind Nebraska before play was halted due to darkness. However, a strong finish to the second round shifted the momentum, enabling them to take a two-stroke lead over Saint Mary’s with a score of +5. Mizzou’s stellar five-under par performance in the final round proved to be the best of the tournament, propelling them to victory.

Nebraska finished third at +14, followed by Kansas State at +21, rounding out the top four placements.

Varjun’s Path to Victory: A Closer Look

Varjun’s final round was nothing short of spectacular. Starting the day in second place at even par, he unleashed a career-best round of four-under 66. His game included one eagle and four birdies against just two bogeys. Notably, he made an eagle on the pivotal par-four eighth hole, starting a run that paved the way for his victory.

Varjun reflected on his victory, stating, “Winning today was huge, and getting it done in front of the home crowd makes it extra special.” The atmosphere at home brings a unique kind of energy, and for Varjun, it just feels right. He credited his team’s hard work and determination, stating, “We’ve shown good signs of what we’re capable of, and it’s fantastic to see those efforts translating into results.”

Supporting Stars: Tigers Shine Brightly

The triumph wasn’t solely about Varjun; the entire team excelled with four Tigers finishing in the top 10. Freshman Trent Mierl placed third, matching the best finish of his young career with a one-over 211 (71-68-72). Meanwhile, sophomore Veikka Viskari secured fifth place, carding +2 (69-74-69) with two rounds under par. Finally, freshman Bubba Chapman shined by attaining eighth place with a score of +3 (70-73-70), the best performance of his budding career.

Looking Ahead: A Promising Season Awaits

The Tigers are slated to return to action next Monday at the Mossy Oak Collegiate, hosted by Mississippi State. With the momentum from this impressive victory, the team is poised to build on their success and further establish their presence in collegiate golf.

In summary, the University of Missouri men’s golf team’s victory at the 2025 Tiger Intercollegiate exemplifies their determination and skill, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting and successful season ahead. For more updates on collegiate sports, visit NCAA.com.
