Oklahoma’s Men’s Golf Team Shines at the Valspar Intercollegiate Invitational

PALM CITY, Fla. – The University of Oklahoma’s men’s golf team continued to prove its prowess on the fairways, securing a hard-fought fourth place at the Valspar Intercollegiate Invitational. With standout performances and strategic gameplay, the Sooners wrapped up their tournament with impressive stats, rightfully earning their No. 7 ranking among elite competition.

Summy’s Stellar Performance

Leading the charge for the Sooners was Jase Summy, who delivered a remarkable runner-up finish. His tournament total of 197 (-16) not only tied him for the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in Oklahoma’s illustrious history but also established a new personal best. Summy’s impressive rounds of 65, 64, and 68 at the par-71 Floridian National Golf Club showcased his remarkable consistency and skill. With 21 birdies during the tournament, including a bogey-free 64 in his second round, Summy proved to be a formidable force on the course.

Notable Contributions from Teammates

While Summy shone brightly, he wasn’t alone in his pursuit. Ryder Cowan joined him in the red numbers, bouncing back from a challenging opening round of 73 to finish the tournament at 2-under, securing a T32 placement. His tenacity and resolve were palpable as he recorded rounds of 68 and 70 to help bolster the Sooners’ overall performance.

Unfortunately, the remainder of the Oklahoma lineup struggled to find their rhythm. Drew Goodman finished at +1, placing 44th, while Clark Van Gaalen and Matthew Troutman ended up tied for 49th and shared 57th places, respectively. Despite the mixed results, Van Gaalen managed to contribute with 41 pars, the second most among all competitors.

A Tough Field of Competitors

Competing against a field loaded with talent, the Sooners finished with a commendable team score of -21, landing them behind three top-15 teams. Texas, ranked second nationally, clinched the team title with an astonishing score of -36. Oklahoma’s performance included victories over seven ranked teams, notably defeating the top-ranked Auburn, who finished just one stroke behind in fifth place.

The ultimate crown in the individual leaderboard went to David Ford from North Carolina, who outperformed Summy by two strokes, reaffirming his status as the nation’s top-ranked golfer.

Looking Ahead

As they look to build on their successes, the Sooners are gearing up for their next challenge at the Maridoe Collegiate, scheduled for March 24-25 in Fort Worth. With Jase Summy leading the way and consistent team effort, Oklahoma is set to make a significant mark as they continue their season.
