Rutgers Softball Falls to Michigan in Thrilling Series Finale

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – In a hard-fought battle, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights faced a tough challenge from the Michigan Wolverines in the final game of their series on Monday afternoon at Alumni Field, ultimately suffering an 8-4 defeat. Despite the loss, the Scarlet Knights showcased impressive moments and a tenacious spirit, particularly from their younger athletes.

Rising Stars Shine Bright

Freshman sensation Addie Osborne made headlines by hitting her very first career home run in what turned out to be a pivotal moment for Rutgers. This shot not only marked a personal milestone for the rookie but also accounted for RU’s first run of the afternoon, energizing the team and its supporters.

In addition, Baleigh Burtis had a standout performance, going 3-for-4 at the plate and earning herself a crucial two-run double that helped the Scarlet Knights rally in the fifth inning. Redshirt freshman Stephanie Kraska capped off the scoring for Rutgers with an RBI single in the seventh inning, an impressive show of skill during a crucial moment.

A Rocky Start for the Scarlet Knights

The game began in challenging fashion for Rutgers. Michigan powered through their first at-bat, establishing an early lead with a 3-0 advantage. Key plays by Indiana Langford and Jenissa Conway, along with a two-run double from Sieber, stunned the Scarlet Knights. The Wolverines didn’t let up in the second inning, as they scored three more runs when Ella McVey launched a base-clearing double, pushing Michigan’s lead to 6-0.

The Scarlet Knights Make Their Move

Facing a significant deficit, Rutgers refused to back down. The tide began to turn in the top of the fifth, where Addie Osborne’s home run ignited a spark. The team loaded the bases with strategic hits and plays, bringing Burtis into the spotlight again, as she delivered a two-run double to left. This spectacular effort narrowed the gap to 6-3, demonstrating the Scarlet Knights’ fighting spirit.

However, Michigan responded decisively. In their final at-bat, McVey blasted a two-run inside-the-park home run, extending their lead to 8-3. Even with the odds stacked against them, Rutgers kept pushing forward.

A Fight ‘Til the End

In the seventh inning, the Scarlet Knights displayed their grit one last time. With two outs, Bailey Briggs earned a walk, and Burtis delivered another single, setting the stage for Kraska, who drove in a run with a superb single up the middle. This brought the final score to 8-4, and despite the loss, the Scarlet Knights showcased formidable resilience.
