Strom Named to WGCA National Coach of the Year Watch List: A Game-Changer for Ohio State Women’s Golf
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Excitement is in the air as Lisa Strom, the head coach of Ohio State women’s golf, has earned a coveted spot on the Division I Jackie Steinmann WGCA National Coach of the Year Presented by Golf Pride Watch List. This prestigious announcement by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) highlights Strom’s impressive leadership and the remarkable performance of the Buckeyes during the current season.
The Buckeyes Rise to Prominence
Under Strom’s guidance, the No. 13 Buckeyes have established themselves as a powerhouse in college golf. With tournament victories at both the Clemson Invitational and the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational, there’s no denying that this season has been one for the books. The team has consistently showcased their skill and tenacity, placing in the top-10 in all 11 events they’ve competed in. Notably, they achieved a thrilling third-place finish at the NCAA Regionals held at the iconic OSU Scarlet Course, along with a strong fourth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships.
Record-Breaking Performance
The highlight of the season came during the Clemson Invitational, where the Buckeyes made waves by breaking three program records. They finished the tournament an astonishing 45-under (819), marking a new high in team 18-hole, 36-hole, and 54-hole scoring. It’s performances like these that illustrate the caliber of talent coalescing under Strom’s stewardship.
Star Players Shine Bright
One of the standout performers this season has been Kary Hollenbaugh, who has captured the spotlight with four tournament victories, tying her for the most wins in a single season in program history. Hollenbaugh’s stellar finish—tying for second place at the Big Ten Championships—earned her First Team All-Big Ten honors.
Additionally, senior standout Faith Choi and promising freshman Nellie Ong were both recognized for their skill, earning spots on the All-Big Ten Second Team.
Consistency and Qualification
Strom’s leadership has led the Buckeyes to qualify for NCAA Regionals in each of her four seasons at the helm. This year marks an especially noteworthy achievement, as the team will make its return to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2018.
What’s Next?
The anticipation surrounding Strom and her team ramps up as the award for National Coach of the Year will be announced following the NCAA Championships, scheduled to take place from May 16-21 in Carlsbad, California.
The future looks bright for Ohio State women’s golf, and with Strom leading the charge, there’s no telling how far this talented team can go.
