Michigan’s Gymnastic Titans Soar at NCAA Championships Qualifiers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The stage was set at Crisler Center for an electrifying showdown in men’s gymnastics on April 18, 2023. The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men’s gymnastics team showcased their prowess, securing their spot in the NCAA Finals with an impressive performance that left fans on the edge of their seats. With a team score of 329.824, the Wolverines bested formidable opponents like Stanford and Illinois, ensuring their path forward in this prestigious competition.

A Powerhouse Performance

How It Unfolded

The Wolverines completed their session with a stellar series of routines that highlighted their talent and determination. As they edged out their rivals, including No. 3 Stanford (329.028) and No. 6 Illinois (323.195), they demonstrated why they are among the elite teams in NCAA gymnastics and prepared for fierce competition against No. 4 Nebraska, No. 1 Oklahoma, and No. 5 Penn State in the finals.

Vault: A Strong Start

In the vault event, sophomore standout Will Young delivered a career-best performance, scoring 14.300 — a remarkable increase of 0.45 points over his previous high. Supported by fierce efforts from teammates Solen Chiodi (13.866), Fred Richard (13.466), and Paul Juda (13.766), the Wolverines solidified their lead with a combined score of 55.598 after the first rotation.

Building Momentum

Parallel Bars: Leadership Maintained

The strong performance continued on the parallel bars, where Richard secured a team-high score of 14.233. Contributing to this impressive showing were Evgeny Siminiuc (13.800), Pierce Wolfgang (13.600), and Logan McKeown (13.100). This collective effort allowed U-M to extend their lead to 110.331, overtaking second-place Stanford (107.998).

High Bar: Returning with a Vengeance

Making a comeback, Carson Eshelman anchored the high bar with a stellar score of 13.966 — his first competition since early February. With additional solid performances from Siminiuc, Juda, and Richard, the Wolverines maintained their dominance, reaching a combined score of 165.162 at the contest’s halfway mark.

The Final Push

Floor Exercise: Setting the Bar

The excitement escalated during the floor exercise as Juda delivered a season-best performance of 14.266. Newcomer Javier Alfonso made an impactful debut, scoring 13.666, while Chiodi and Young added 13.733 each. Their combined efforts brought U-M to a meet-leading total of 220.560.

Pommel Horse: Securing the Lead

The intensity ramped up when the Wolverines achieved a season-high score of 55.766 on the pommel horse. Highlighted by Aaronson Mansberger’s score of 14.466 and Richard tying his season-high of 14.100, Michigan surged to their largest lead of the contest, outpacing Stanford 276.326 to 272.928 before the final rotation.

Concluding the Meet

Still Rings: A Finishing Touch

The meet culminated with the still rings, where Rithik Puri led the team with a score of 13.833. Despite Eshelman’s fall on the dismount, the steady performances from Juda (13.766) and Alfonso (13.733) ensured Michigan’s victory, sealing their advancement to the finals with confidence and flair.
