Semifinals Recap: A Fierce Competition
In the semifinals, Wake Forest faced a daunting opponent in the Stanford Cardinal, the reigning NCAA champions. The Cardinal had been unbeaten in 93 matches this season, boasting an impeccable match play record. Nonetheless, the Deacs were unfazed, determined to prove their mettle.
Competition was fierce as both teams exchanged points. Sarah Lydic emerged as a standout player, swiftly gaining a commanding lead to finish her match with an extraordinary 8&6 victory, marking the Deacs’ first point on the scoreboard. While Stanford responded with a couple of points, the Deacs answered back valiantly.
Kovelesky’s determination shone through as she faced adversity down three holes after the 10th. However, she rallied magnificently to end her match two up, including an impressive eagle on the 18th hole that tied the match at 2-2.
The Decisive Moment: Macy Pate’s Clutch Performance
With the pressure mounting, attention turned to sophomore Macy Pate as she stood ready to secure the final decisive point for Wake Forest. Tied through holes 15 and 16, Pate displayed nerves of steel by birdying the 17th to gain a crucial lead. A superb putt on hole 18 sealed her victory two up, sending the Deacs into the championship final with a thrilling 3-2 match win over Stanford.
