UTRGV Women’s Golf Team Competes at the "Mo" Morial Invitational
BRYAN, TX – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s golf team capped off their participation in the prestigious "Mo" Morial Invitational with a commendable 12th-place finish at the Traditions Golf Club, hosted by Texas A&M on Tuesday.
Strong Finish on Day Three
In an impressive display of resilience, the Vaqueros showcased their strength, posting their best round of the tournament with a final score of 317. This marked a significant improvement of five strokes from their previous round, bringing their cumulative three-round score to 963, just two strokes shy of breaking into the coveted top-10.
Spotlight on Standout Performers
When it comes to shining moments, sophomore Natalia Rodriguez emerged as the star for UTRGV, finishing tied for 17th place with a three-round total of 232, following a solid final round score of 78. Another contributor to the team’s efforts was senior Cristina Galban, who secured 39th place with an aggregate score of 238 after finishing with a 76 in the final round.
Freshman Kieli Saenz and junior Jackie Howard Gonzalez faced difficult challenges as they wrapped up their tournaments; Saenz finished tied for 59th with a score of 247 while Howard Gonzalez landed in 68th place with 255 overall. Rounding off the team’s performance was sophomore Preston Saiz, who placed 83rd after scoring 83 in the final round.
Tournament Highlights
- Team Champion: Texas A&M claimed the overall team title with a dominating three-round score of 880, firmly establishing their prowess in the competitive field.
- Individual Champion: Cayetana Fernandez of Texas A&M took home the individual honors, finishing with an impressive total of 214 after a stellar 70 in the final round.

Looking ahead, the Vaqueros have their sights set on the Southland Conference Championship, scheduled for April 14-16, where they will compete at the Kissing Tree Golf Course in San Marcos. Their recent performance at the "Mo" Morial Invitational bodes well for their upcoming challenges, as they seek to improve their standings against formidable opponents.
