New Flea Markets Open in Tallahassee: A Fresh Start for Local Vendors

Reviving Community Spirit After Market Closure

In an exciting turn of events for Tallahassee residents, two brand-new flea markets are set to open this weekend, just weeks after the long-standing Flea Market Tallahassee closed its doors for good. This timely arrival offers a beacon of hope for local vendors and a chance for shopping enthusiasts to explore diverse offerings once more.

Where to Find the New Markets

Location, as they say, is everything. These two fresh markets will be hosted at:

  • 9372 Woodville Highway: A spacious parking lot eagerly anticipating the buzz of vendors and customers.
  • Tallahassee Urban League: Located on Old Bainbridge Road, this community-focused venue aims to embrace local entrepreneurship.

A Legacy Lost, But Not Forgotten

The closure of the Flea Market Tallahassee in July came after it suffered extensive damage from a winter storm earlier in January. This decision left hundreds of vendors scrambling for new opportunities.

Gordon Cox, owner of S.C.R.E.W.S. Tool Library, was one of the first to take action. He was spurred by a sense of community responsibility and quickly began distributing flyers to alert vendors of his available space. “We’re less than a mile from the flea market, we have a big open parking lot, and on Saturdays no one is here, so why not offer it up to the vendors?” he stated.

A Vendor’s Perspective: Inspiration Amidst Uncertainty

As Cox prepared for the opening, excitement filled the air. He noted, “One of the older vendors that had been there for 40 years looked at me with a big smile and said, ‘This is going to be a success.’” Such sentiments have stoked the flames of entrepreneurship and hope, showcasing the community’s resilience.

Urban League: Paving the Path for Local Businesses

Meanwhile, the Urban League is stepping up to host around 25 vendors at their facility, emphasizing the importance of local commerce. President Curtis Taylor shared the organization’s commitment: “We will do everything we can to ensure that these businesses have a permanent space where they can thrive.

Potential permanent locations being considered include the North Florida Fairgrounds and Carter-Howell-Strong Park on Georgia St. The league is determined to foster an environment where local vendors can flourish.

Mark Your Calendars: Market Hours

Ready to support local businesses and discover unique treasures? Here are the opening hours for the new markets:

  • Woodville Hwy Market: Open from 10 AM to 4 PM on Saturday.
  • Urban League Market: Open from 9 AM to 5 PM on both Saturday and Sunday.

Join the Movement: Support Local Vendors

This is more than just an opportunity to shop; it’s a chance to revitalize the community. Your presence at these new markets can make a significant difference. So, whether you’re a longtime flea market fan or a curious newcomer, mark your calendars and show your support for local vendors who have weathered a storm—both literally and metaphorically.
