Exciting News: The Return of "Editor’s Notes"

The musical heartbeat of the Triangle resonates deeply within the vibrant community of Chapel Hill, showcasing the diverse talents of local artists. From the timeless melodies of Elizabeth Cotten to the latest sounds from UNC student bands, there’s a musical pulse that beats stronger with each passing week. Bluegrass, hip-hop, alt-rock, and indie melodies fill the air, and the embrace of this eclectic mix is precisely what makes the region so enchanting. This pulsating energy serves as the inspiration behind our upcoming Music Edition, and we have some thrilling news to share!

A Bit of History: The Legacy of "Editor’s Notes"

Last year, the inaugural Music Edition laid the foundation for something remarkable. The former Lifestyle Editors, Eliza Benbow and Emi Maerz, curated “Editor’s Notes,” a captivating video series spotlighting local artistic talent. This important initiative aimed to enhance The Daily Tar Heel’s commitment to engaging with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro music scene, fulfilling a need for accessible and relatable coverage. Discover more about our commitment to local music here.

Inspired by Greatness: The Influences Behind the Series

“Editor’s Notes” took cues from acclaimed music performance series like NPR’s “Tiny Desk Concerts” and WXYC’s “Backyard BBQ.” The spirit of local celebrations resonated further with the DTH Diversions Desk’s live concert series, “Dive Parties.” What sets "Editor’s Notes" apart is its unique localization, firmly grounded in the youthful energy of The Daily Tar Heel’s Lifestyle Desk.

Our First Episode: A Journey into Folk Music

The series kicked off with a breathtaking performance by Bill Moore, a current UNC junior. He serenaded viewers with four original tracks from his debut folk album, “New Piedmont Style.” Filmed in our DTH office, the episode featured nostalgic newspaper clippings, a Carolina Blue wall, and a charming handmade sign crafted by Benbow and Maerz. A New Chapter: Reviving "Editor’s Notes"

When I stepped into the role of Lifestyle Editor in the fall of 2024, I not only embraced the desk’s rich history but also the profound mission behind “Editor’s Notes.” I was determined to breathe new life into this series and nurture its growth.

Yet, revitalizing the series proved to be an uphill climb filled with challenges and delays. Navigating unanswered emails, a congested publishing schedule, and even the joyous occasion of welcoming a new addition to a team member’s family delayed our progress. Nevertheless, after thoughtful planning with my talented Assistant Editors, Nadia Jefferson and Morgan Brenner, combined with the innovative insights from the Audio-Visual Desk led by Natalie Bradin and Amelie Fawson, we forged ahead.

The Comeback: What to Expect from "Editor’s Notes"

After many months of preparation and collaboration, I am thrilled to announce the return of “Editor’s Notes!” The revival will maintain the foundational format of our first episode, featuring local musicians performing inside The DTH office, beneath the cherished original “Editor’s Notes” sign.

What’s New? A Dynamic Interactive Experience

This new iteration promises an exciting twist: a live Q&A segment! This segment will allow viewers to learn more about the performance songs, the musical process behind them, and the talented artists creating these magical sounds—all interwoven into a single engaging video.

We are on a mission to ensure that the vibrant music scene of the Triangle remains accessible to everyone with an internet connection. Get ready for an enriching journey as we reconnect with local music talent through “Editor’s Notes,” a series designed to inspire, inform, and captivate.
