Released just three months after Donald Trump’s inauguration, this film carries with it a weight of commentary and expectations that it can’t fully embrace. While its production wrapped back in March of last year, those involved probably hoped to ride the wave of excitement surrounding a narrative featuring a Black female president stepping into her power. Unfortunately, that resonance is now eclipsed by the current state of affairs in America, where leadership has taken a decidedly darker turn.

Set against the backdrop of a G20 summit in South Africa, G20 follows President Danielle Sutton, played with fierce determination by the incomparable Viola Davis. As the conference aims to enhance digital banking access in impoverished regions of Africa, chaos erupts when terrorists, led by the menacing Antony Starr (known for his role in The Boys), hijack the event. Their agenda? To use deepfake technology to fuel fear and distrust, ultimately steering global finances towards a crypto dominion.
In this tumultuous landscape, Sutton must shed her formal persona—donned in heels—and embrace her military training, gun in hand, ready to combat both the terrorists and the pervasive skepticism they sow. The stakes are sky-high, with Sutton aiming not only to save her family but also to protect the world economy from falling into the hands of the villainous tech brokers.
Viola Davis: A Stellar Performance
Viola Davis is undoubtedly the film’s trump card. Her portrayal of President Sutton is a masterclass in leadership and resilience.
