West Virginia University Track and Field Team Dazzles at the Bison Outdoor Classic
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University (WVU) track and field team wrapped up an exhilarating weekend of competition at the Bison Outdoor Classic, held at the historic Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. This annual event brought together exceptional talent, and the Mountaineers showcased their skills with remarkable performances.
Key Highlights from the Track
Leading the charge for WVU was redshirt sophomore Olivia Cress, who captured attention with her impressive 10th place finish in the women’s 200 meters, clocking a personal best of 24.80 seconds. Cress’s outstanding performance was complemented by junior Sierra Heisey, who also achieved a personal best, finishing just behind Cress with a time of 25.90 seconds. Their results reflect the hard work and determination this team has shown throughout the season.
In the sprinting events, freshman Sabria Jones made her mark in the 100 meters, crossing the finish line in a swift 12.48 seconds. Not to be outdone, Heisey flashed her speed once more, notching another personal record of 12.69 seconds in the same event. Both athletes demonstrated their potential to be key contributors as the season progresses.
Distance Events and Further Achievements
As the competition continued, freshman Carlene Temple dazzled the crowd with her performance in the 400 meters, finishing with a strong time of 57.63 seconds. She was followed closely by sophomore Cate Pickering, who completed the race in 59.57 seconds. The synergy and teamwork displayed by the female sprinters and middle-distance runners highlight a promising future for the Mountaineers.
Looking Ahead
With the Bison Outdoor Classic now in the books, the Mountaineers are already setting their sights on upcoming competitions. They will split their squad for two exciting events over the weekend of April 16-19: the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Mountaineer Twilight. The Bryan Clay Invitational will kick off on Wednesday at Cougar Athletic Stadium in Azusa, California, while the Mountaineer Twilight will take place beginning Friday at the Track & Field Complex at Mylan Park in Morgantown.
