Mississippi State Softball: Dominating the Diamond with Unstoppable Energy

Starkville, MS – The Mississippi State Bulldogs showcased a spectacular performance on Sunday, unleashing a 10-run barrage against the Missouri Tigers, sealing a commanding 10-2 run-rule victory. This triumph marks an impressive 14th run-rule victory of the season, bringing the Bulldogs tantalizingly close to matching their program record set last year.

A Historic Display of Power

Behind a powerful lineup that delivered four thrilling home runs, the Bulldogs (33-11, 9-6 SEC) demonstrated their offensive prowess. Highlighting the day was Kiarra Sells, who achieved her first-ever multi-homer game, while fellow teammates Morgan Stiles and Ella Wesolowski contributed significantly with multiple RBIs. Wesolowski ended the game with a stellar 2-for-3 performance, and Sierra Sacco further dazzled with three hits, reaching base every time she stepped to the plate.

Coach Ricketts’ Strategy Shines

Head coach Samantha Ricketts praised her team’s resilience, stating, "I thought we did a really good job of sticking to our plan." Ricketts emphasized the collective effort as each player showcased their talents, ensuring that the pressure is not solely on pivotal players like Sacco. This philosophy not only strengthens their batting lineup but also dramatically eases the burden on their pitching staff.

Stellar Pitching Performances

In addition to an explosive offense, the Bulldogs’ pitching was equally impressive. Raelin Chaffin threw her 14th complete game of the season, celebrating her 18th win—ranking her as tied for eighth in the school’s history. After a rocky start where the Tigers took a quick 2-0 lead, Chaffin recovered brilliantly, retiring 11 consecutive batters and effectively stifling Missouri’s offense.

Wesolowski Sets a New Standard

Wesolowski didn’t just shine at the plate; her standout performance included picking off State’s eighth runner of the year, breaking a team single-season record. With 6-for-8 at the plate during the series—and three doubles—Wesolowski proved to be an all-around force on the field.

Student-Athlete Spotlight: Voices from the Team

Kiarra Sells spoke about her recent success, saying, "I’ve just been trusting the process of it all," highlighting her mindset on staying relaxed at the plate. Similarly, Sierra Sacco reflected on the team’s collective strength, noting, "It’s a lot easier whenever you have eight hitters behind you."

After falling behind early in the game, Sacco emphasized the importance of responding quickly to maintain momentum. "It’s important to answer back right away," she stated, showcasing leadership that sparks the team’s fire.

A Home Run Celebration

Call The Bomb Squad! This season, the Bulldogs have scored an astonishing 117 runs from homers, accounting for 39 percent of their overall scoring. With 61 home runs this season, the team is on track for a historic year, ranked fourth in program history.

Top performances include:

  • Morgan Bernardini: Clobbered her fourth home run of the season.
  • Sierra Sacco: Achieved a series batting average of .667, making her 12-for-22 against Missouri in her career.
  • Kiarra Sells: Not only did she hit multiple home runs but also tied for the team lead with her third outfield assist.

Upcoming Challenges

As they move forward, the Bulldogs face formidable opponents in the coming weeks. They will battle No. 2 Oklahoma from April 18-20 before heading to Kentucky on April 25-27. Excitement builds as the next match at Oklahoma City’s Devon Park, home of the Women’s College World Series, approaches. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm CT.
