SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The 78th Western Intercollegiate got off to an exciting start as University of Hawai’i’s senior star, Tyler Ogawa, showcased his skill at the renowned Pasatiempo Golf Club. With a commanding performance, Ogawa put together a 2-over 72 in Round 1, leaving spectators eager for what’s to come.
A Promising Start with a Tough Finish
Ogawa’s journey through the first round began on a high note. He found himself 1-under par after 13 holes, thanks to spectacular birdies on the 5th and 12th holes. His early momentum suggested that he might challenge the leaderboard. However, as the pressure mounted in the final stretch, he encountered difficulties, battling through three bogeys over his last five holes, ultimately finishing in tied for 43rd place.
The Team Struggles and Competitive Landscape
The overall performance of the Rainbow Warriors reflected a challenging day. The team ended up tied for 13th place, posting a total score of 17-over 367. San Diego State took the lead with an impressive 12-under 338, while Arizona, Stanford, and Nihon University of Japan all trailed closely, tied at 5-under 345.
Notable Performances from the Rainbow Warriors
Three other team members demonstrated commendable resilience. Nathan Szpakowicz, James Whitworth, and Garrett Takeuchi each posted scores of 3-over 73, landing them in a tie for 61st place. Takeuchi also shone in the long-drive contest, securing a second-place finish, a nice accolade amidst the spirited competition. Meanwhile, Anson Cabello and Dane Watanabe found themselves tied for 80th place with scores of 6-over 76.
Additionally, competing as an individual, Josh Hayashida mirrored Ogawa’s efforts with a score of 2-over 72, also placing tied for 43rd.
What’s Next for the Rainbow Warriors?
The excitement continues as the tournament progresses. The second round is set to commence Tuesday morning with tee times scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. PT. The Rainbow Warriors will be grouped with UC Irvine, slated to tee off at 11:00 a.m. PT. Golf fans won’t want to miss the live coverage on the Golf Channel from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. PT (or 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. HT).
