Viskari Shines Bright on Day One of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship

A Promising Start for Missouri Golfers

The first day of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship proved to be an exciting chapter for the University of Missouri Men’s Golf team, with sophomore standout Veikka Viskari taking the lead for the Tigers. After a steady beginning with an opening round of 74, Viskari sprang into action during the second round, delivering an impressive three-under-par 69. This performance catapulted him up the leaderboard, showcasing his remarkable skills and competitive spirit.

Viskari’s Stellar Performance

During the second round, Viskari displayed exceptional precision and composure. He notched a total of six birdies, with an astonishing four coming in his final seven holes. This late surge not only highlighted his ability to close rounds effectively but also propelled him up 19 spots, placing him 21st overall after two rounds. Throughout the day, he has accumulated 12 birdies over 36 holes, demonstrating his knack for finding the bottom of the cup.

Team Standings and Contributions

But Viskari wasn’t alone in contributing to the Tigers’ performance. The team’s dynamic was supplemented by three other golfers, each finishing the day at +4. They included:

  • Mattias Varjun: Consistent with rounds of 74-74
  • Brock Snyder: A strong start with a 72, followed by a 76
  • Virgilio Paz: Matching Varjun’s steady performance with two rounds of 74

Notably, two Tigers soared above the competition with remarkable eagles during the first round. Paz delivered a stellar performance with a three on the par-five ninth hole, while Trevor Mierl followed suit with an eagle on the par-five 15th, showcasing their ability to seize opportunities on the course.

Current Standings

As the day wrapped up, Mizzou found itself in 10th place among 13 competing schools, with a cumulative team score of +10. While still in the chase, the Tigers have laid a foundation for potential success in the upcoming rounds.

Looking Ahead: Day Two of Competition

With Day Two on the horizon, anticipation is building as the Tigers prepare to tackle the course once again. The first player is set to tee off at 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday morning, and all eyes will be on Viskari and his teammates as they aim to improve their standings and bring home a strong finish for Missouri.
