Alpha Gamma Delta and Table to Table: A Powerful Alliance Against Hunger in New Jersey

H2: Tackling Food Insecurity with Compassion and Commitment

In a world where food insecurity remains a significant challenge, forging impactful partnerships is essential. This February, Alpha Gamma Delta made headlines by becoming the first Greek organization to join forces with Table to Table, New Jersey’s premier food rescue organization. Together, they are not just addressing hunger; they are reshaping the community’s approach to ensuring that no one goes to bed hungry.

H3: A Serendipitous Start to a Meaningful Partnership

The seeds for this fruitful collaboration were sown through a simple Facebook post. According to Sarah Hart, a junior studying finance and economics and the president of Alpha Gamma Delta, the idea blossomed after her mother shared news of her new position alongside the sorority’s commitment to philanthropy. A friend of Hart’s mother, who is affiliated with Table to Table, recognized the alignment of their missions and reached out.

H4: More Than Just Food: The Broader Impact of Hunger

As the partnership progressed, it became clear that the initiatives shared by Alpha Gamma Delta and Table to Table transcend mere food distribution. Arianna Valte, the sorority’s vice president of philanthropy and a sophomore biology major, emphasizes that effective hunger relief involves addressing its profound effects on well-being. “Food insecurity impacts mental, emotional, and physical health,” Valte explains. “Without proper nutrition, achieving academic and personal goals becomes nearly impossible.”

Beyond just providing meals, Table to Table prioritizes nutritional value. “It’s crucial to deliver wholesome, nourishing food instead of just quick, processed meals,” Valte insists, echoing the sentiments of her fellow sorority members.

H3: Fresh Food, Real Impact

Sarah Hart elaborates on the mission of Table to Table, highlighting its dedication to rescuing fresh, leftover food rather than processed items. “They collect nutritious offerings that would otherwise go to waste and deliver them to elderly homes, families in need, and homeless shelters,” says Hart. This approach ensures that communities receive meals that truly support their health.

H4: Bridging Faith and Service

The partnership also has a spiritual dimension, as noted by Elizabeth Fleming, the vice president of administration and a junior public relations major. During one particular event, food was delivered to a local church, demonstrating the intrinsic connection between community service and faith. "For many, participating in this effort aligns with their values and offers support to those facing food insecurity," she remarks.

H3: Hands-On Initiatives: Making a Difference Together

Every Friday, Alpha Gamma Delta mobilizes its members for food rescues, collecting surplus food from Seton Hall University and Newark Academy, a prestigious middle and high school. The bounty is then taken to Jesus Saves Boarding Home, where it feeds residents three meals a day, showcasing the tangible impact of their efforts.

Another successful initiative is the sandwich-making events, where members collaboratively prepare meals for those in need. “Thanks to the guidance of a Table to Table representative, we made an impressive 523 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches,” shares Fleming. These hands-on activities not only fill bellies but also foster camaraderie among members.

H4: Inspiring Engagement Through Fun and Friendly Competition

Hart recounts how these events often turn into friendly competitions, with members vying to see who can make and collect the most! “When you approach these service activities with joy and openness, they become incredibly rewarding,” she states.

H3: A Vision for the Future

As their partnership flourishes, Alpha Gamma Delta is eager to continue working with Table to Table. “This collaboration not only enriches our community but also reinforces our commitment to philanthropy,” says Molly Quigley-Sanborn, a biology and psychology major and director of community services.

Reflecting on the journey, Fleming highlights the transformative experiences afforded by this collaboration. “We rarely have the opportunity to consistently partner with an organization and witness the direct impact we can have on the lives of others,” she says.

H2: Join the Movement Against Hunger

The partnership between Alpha Gamma Delta and Table to Table serves as a beacon of hope in the fight against food insecurity. By uniting their strengths, they are ensuring that healthier meals reach those who need them most. If you’re inspired by their story, consider how you can get involved in your local community—and help make hunger a thing of the past.
