Syracuse’s Salt City Market Cuts Sunday Hours: What You Need to Know
Exciting changes are coming this summer to the vibrant Salt City Market, a culinary haven located in the heart of downtown Syracuse. Starting Memorial Day weekend, all restaurant vendors at this bustling food hall will officially close on Sundays, shifting to a Monday through Saturday operational schedule.
A Shift in Operations: Background
Previously, Salt City Market allowed individual vendors to choose one day of the week for closure. This led to a variety of operating hours amongst the market’s ten diverse vendors. Currently, the lineup includes:
- Four vendors shut down on Sundays
- Three close on Mondays
- Two take a break on Tuesdays
- One vendor closes on Wednesdays
The new Sunday closure will also impact the Wildflowers Armory outpost, which is typically closed on Mondays.
What’s Not Changing?
Fear not, Syracuse’s local favorites remain open! The market’s anchor tenants, the Syracuse Cooperative Market and Salt City Coffee and Bar, will continue to welcome visitors seven days a week. These beloved establishments boast separate entrances and are committed to consistently serving the community.
As it stands, the market is open Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.. The feedback collected from both customers and vendors has prompted this scheduling shift. It becomes increasingly clear that visitors desire more vendor options available on Mondays, and the Sunday reduced hours were contributing to a less-than-ideal experience.
Customer-Centric Decision
“Our customers are really at the core of this decision,” CJ Butler, marketing & communications manager of Salt City Market, emphasized in a news release. “Having 10 restaurants under one roof means that when nearly half the market is closed on certain days, it can dampen the experience for our patrons.”
Nicole Whyte, the market coordinator, further articulated the delicate balance needed, stating, “We’d love to have every single vendor open seven days a week, but our vendors are small, mostly family-run businesses. They need time to rest, clean, and prep."
Growth and Stability
Since its grand opening in January 2023, Salt City Market has cultivated a dynamic mix of vendors, adapting to shifting culinary trends and community needs. The market is operated by the nonprofit Allyn Family Foundation’s Syracuse Urban Partnership, committed to fostering local business growth.
In recent months, vendor turnover has stabilized, with exciting new additions like Doomsday Pasta, which started as a pop-up but is now here to stay. And if you haven’t tasted the sweet and savory offerings of SinBun or enjoyed a bite from ElleRae’s Tacos, now’s the time to explore!
A Community Hub
Beyond just food, Salt City Market serves as an education space, featuring a teaching kitchen and a community room that brings people together through shared culinary experiences. This further enriches the market’s role as a key player in the local community.
As Salt City Market prepares for these changes, it remains focused on meeting the needs of both its vendors and the patrons who support them. So mark your calendars and get ready to savor Syracuse’s gastronomic delights—now with a little more consistency!
