Sakellaris Makes History: First Rainbow Wahine Swimmer to Achieve CSC Academic All-America Honors
A Historic Achievement for Women’s Swimming at the University of Hawai’i
In a groundbreaking moment for Rainbow Wahine swimming, Arianna Sakellaris has etched her name into the program’s history books by becoming the first swimmer from this esteemed team to earn CSC Academic All-America honors. Announced on Tuesday, Sakellaris’ achievement not only showcases her athletic prowess but also highlights her commitment to academic excellence.
An Academic Star on the Rise
Arianna, a graduate student majoring in clinical research, is part of an elite group of only 30 women’s swim and dive athletes selected for the NCAA Division I Academic All-America teams by the College Sports Communicators (CSC), formerly known as CoSIDA. This prestigious honor underscores her dedication both in the pool and in the classroom.
Setting Records and Breaking Barriers
Originally from Zurich, Switzerland, Sakellaris made headlines earlier this season by being one of four Rainbow Wahine to earn CSC Academic All-District honors on April 1. Furthermore, on April 14, she was recognized as part of the Academic All-Big West team. Her versatility extends beyond academics; she actively participated in community events, including the Women Speaking Out initiative at the Swing Fore Love Charity Golf Invitational.
Swim Success at the Big West Championship
Sakellaris poured her heart into her performance at the Big West Championship, where her remarkable efforts helped her team set a new conference record in the 400 freestyle relay with an impressive time of 3:20.04. Sporting an individual split of 50.61 seconds, she played a crucial role in this gold medal triumph. Additionally, she earned a bronze medal as part of the 800 freestyle relay team, contributing with a stellar split of 1:49.89.
Breaking Records: Top Performances This Season
During her first season with the Rainbow Wahine, Sakellaris consistently showcased her talent, achieving a remarkable trio of top-10 times in multiple events:
- Fifth fastest time in the 1000 freestyle at 10:02.63
- Ninth fastest time in the 500 freestyle at 4:52.53
- Ninth fastest time in the 1650 freestyle at 16:59.08
Her skill didn’t go unnoticed, as she secured eight podium finishes in individual events throughout the regular season, including victories in the 1000 freestyle during dual meets against Grand Canyon and UC Santa Barbara.
The Academic All-America Challenge
To qualify for such a prestigious honor, student-athletes must meet strict criteria, including earning Academic All-District accolades, being at least a sophomore, maintaining a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA, and competing in five events or finishing in the top eight at a conference meet. Sakellaris not only met these benchmarks but excelled beyond them.
