Breaking New Ground: Avery Lay’s Udall Scholarship Recognition

Spears School of Business sophomore Avery Lay has recently earned an honorable mention in the Tribal Policy category of the 2025 Udall Scholarship competition. As a proud citizen of the Cherokee Nation and a Cobell Scholar, Lay’s research shines a spotlight on the profound impact of Elouise Cobell on Native American communities, particularly in areas of tribal trust management and federal accountability.

A Grateful Acknowledgment

Receiving the Udall National Scholar honorable mention means a great deal to me,” Lay expressed. “This award recognizes not just **academic achievement**, but also **consistency** and **dedication**. It inspires me to push for excellence, reminding me that growth is a journey, and this recognition is a significant milestone.”

Internship Experience and Community Involvement

Lay has interned with the Southern Plains Tribal Health Board, gaining crucial insights into the prevalent health challenges that Native communities face. Beyond her internship, she is actively involved in several organizations, including the Honors College, the Native American Student Association, and the Business Student Council.

Future Aspirations

As an economics major with a focus on pre-law, Lay is committed to advancing her career in **tribal land rights, economic justice**, and **public health policy**. Her ambition is clear: to advocate for stronger protections for Native lands, ensure equitable resource distribution, and address systemic health disparities affecting tribal nations.

The OSU Experience

“My time at OSU has profoundly shaped the impact I want to make,” Lay shared. “Being part of such a motivated community encourages me to think beyond my own success. Through classes, group projects, and campus events, I have learned how **collaboration** and even small actions can lead to meaningful change.” She noted the invaluable support from the Office of Scholar Development and Undergraduate Research, which has helped connect her with exceptional mentors. “Whether it was collaborating with peers from diverse backgrounds or learning from passionate professors, I’m inspired to create a positive impact wherever I go.”

OSU’s Legacy of Excellence

Avery Lay is Oklahoma State University’s 12th Udall Honorable Mention, contributing to a proud tradition where, for the sixth consecutive year, at least one OSU student has received recognition in an Indian Country category. This reflects the university’s commitment to fostering future leaders with a passion for public service.

The Udall Scholarship’s Enduring Legacy

The Udall Undergraduate Scholarship program honors the significant contributions of Morris and Stewart Udall in promoting Native American self-governance, healthcare, and responsible stewardship of public lands. The scholarship aims to identify and support future leaders in these vital areas, making Avery Lay’s recognition not just a personal milestone but also a beacon of hope for her community.
