USDA Invests $26.5 Million to Revitalize Local Food Systems

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has unveiled an ambitious initiative to invigorate local food systems across the nation. With a generous allocation of $26.5 million in grant funding, the USDA seeks to bolster supply chains and improve market access for producers, food hubs, and community partners. This move not only supports local agriculture but also strengthens community resilience in the face of changing economic landscapes.

Grant Programs Designed for Growth

The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service has introduced three significant grant programs aimed at fostering sustainable local food systems:

Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP)

  • Total Funding: $11 million available
  • Award Range: $50,000–$500,000
  • Deadline: Apply by June 27th

The FMPP focuses on direct-to-consumer sales, facilitating growth in farmers markets, community-supported agriculture (CSAs), agritourism, and online marketplaces. Funds can be utilized for:

  • Food safety certifications
  • Marketing initiatives
  • On-farm food waste reduction
  • Value-added production

Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP)

  • Total Funding: $11 million available
  • Award Range: $25,000–$500,000
  • Deadline: Apply by June 27th

The LFPP targets intermediaries like aggregators, distributors, and processors within local and regional food chains. Eligible projects may include:

  • Feasibility studies
  • Infrastructure enhancements
  • Cold storage facilities
  • Transportation and logistics improvements
  • Business development and training

Regional Food System Partnerships (RFSP)

  • Total Funding: $4.5 million available
  • Award Range: $100,000–$1 million
  • Deadline: Apply by June 27th

The RFSP funds regional coalitions that aim to coordinate food systems and enhance cross-sector efforts. Key funding uses may involve:

  • Partnership building
  • Systems planning
  • Outreach initiatives
  • Infrastructure coordination

Additional Support Available

Vermont communities, particularly those with populations of 5,000 or fewer, may qualify for grant writing assistance through the Rural Economic Development Initiative (REDI) program. Interested parties can inquire for assistance.

Catalyzing Regional Dairy Workforce Grant

Alongside these programs, a new grant specifically designed to expand dairy workforce development in the Northeast will offer:

  • Awards ranging from $20,000–$100,000
  • 25% in-kind or cash match contribution
  • Total funding of $800,000 available

This opportunity aims to support development, expansion, and operational enhancements of registered apprenticeships and training programs. Apply by June 5th.
