Rainbow Wahine Sailors Show Resilience at ICSA National Semifinals
ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – The journey of the Rainbow Wahine sailors concluded with a remarkable 11th-place finish at the ICSA Women’s Fleet Race National Championship, held on the weekend of May 20-21 in St. Mary’s City, Maryland. Despite facing challenges, the team’s spirited comeback was commendable, showcasing their determination and skill.
A Tough Start and an Inspired Comeback
The competition kicked off with a weather-impacted day one, which saw the sailing events being curtailed. Entering the second day in 16th place, the pressure was on for the Rainbow Wahine to make a significant leap. They entered the fray with a renewed zeal, ultimately finishing the semifinal round with a total of 199 points, narrowly edging out the host, St. Mary’s College, by just one point.
Dominance of Stanford
It’s important to mention that the back-to-back defending champions, Stanford, demonstrated their prowess, clinching the top spot in the semifinals with an impressive score of just 69 points. Their performance served as a benchmark for all teams, including the Rainbow Wahine.
Day Two: A Breakthrough Performance
Fortunately, improved weather conditions graced day two, allowing the sailors to complete a total of 18 races, evenly split between the A and B divisions. In the A division, the talented duo of Vivian Bønsager and Stella Taherian rose to the occasion. Meanwhile, Sophia Shaeffer, Malia Johnson, Martha Schuessler, and Morgan Carew represented the B division with equal determination.
Highlight Performances
Despite a shaky start, the Rainbow Wahine ended the competition on a thrilling note. They finished in the top five in three of their last six races, truly capturing the essence of their fighting spirit. Bønsager and Taherian’s combined performance yielded 80 points, which secured them a commendable 9th place in the A division. Impressively, they consistently ranked in the top ten across five out of nine races, culminating in a spectacular first-place finish in their final race, marking a triumphant end to Bønsager’s collegiate sailing career.
On the flip side, the B division team, composed of Shaeffer, Johnson, Schuessler, and Carew, garnered 119 points, finishing 14th. Their contribution included two celebrated top-ten finishes, reinforcing the team’s tenacity and skill.
