Alumni Board supports Trojan Pantry to fight food insecurity

Troy University’s Alumni Association Board of Directors is making a significant impact on campus by tackling the **urgent issue of food insecurity** through a generous donation to the Trojan Pantry.

Nourishing Campus Community: A Bold Donation

The Alumni Association recently contributed **$2,000** to the Trojan Pantry, an initiative spearheaded by the Office of Civic Engagement that aims to combat food insecurity among students. Launched in **November 2022**, this essential resource is a response to a staggering statistic: **about 30% of college students face food insecurity**. Unfortunately, this trend extends to the students at Troy University.

What is the Trojan Pantry?

Located at **Trojan Village 200**, the **Trojan Pantry** is a welcoming space for all Troy University students. It offers a variety of **nonperishable food items**, personal hygiene products, and essential supplies. Staffed by dedicated student workers and volunteers, the pantry stands as a testament to the power of community support.

Proven Impact on Student Lives

In the 2024-2025 academic year alone, the Trojan Pantry experienced **nearly 1,800 visits**. Lauren Cochran, the Coordinator of Civic Engagement, reported that the pantry averaged over **55 visits weekly**, distributing more than **500 pounds** of vital food, hygiene, and school supply items.

“We have witnessed the incredible generosity of the Trojan family this past year,” Cochran noted. “Supporters have donated financially, physically, and with volunteer efforts. The Trojan Pantry is truly a grassroots initiative, relying on the compassion of faculty, staff, and students alike. Partnerships with local businesses like **Publix** and **Starbucks** are also essential to its success.”

Commitment to Student Success

Jack Weaver, President of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, emphasized the board’s commitment to combating food insecurity among TROY students. He stated, “**We want to retain students** at TROY. The Trojan Pantry serves a vital purpose, ensuring that food insecurity does not hinder our students’ academic ambitions.”

A Collective Effort for a Common Cause

Support for the Trojan Pantry extends beyond the Alumni Association, with additional donations from organizations such as the **Pike County Commission**, **Paradise Home Sales**, and **Big River Car Wash**. These collective efforts help ensure that all students have access to the essential resources they need to thrive academically.

“We are immensely grateful to our Alumni Association for their generous gift,” Cochran expressed. “These contributions allow us to support students and ensure that access to basic needs is not a barrier to their academic success.”
