Michaels Acquires Joann’s IP and Brands: A Strategic Fabric Expansion

In a bold move to capture the hearts of DIY enthusiasts and crafting aficionados, craft retailer **Michaels** has recently acquired the **intellectual property** and **private label brands** of its now-bankrupt competitor, Joann. This acquisition is set to attract loyal customers who once frequented Joann’s fabric and craft stores, which have sadly closed their doors, marking the end of an era in the crafting community.

According to a recent **press release**, Michaels aims to **sew up** the business of fans who were dedicated to Joann’s offerings, providing them with an expanded selection of products precisely when they need it the most.

Transformative Changes Ahead: What Michaels Has in Store

With the acquisition finalized, Michaels is primed to enhance its merchandise, particularly in the realms of **fabric, sewing**, and **yarn**. The company announced it will introduce more than **600 new products**, including household names like Brother and Singer sewing machines, as well as innovative items such as **Oliso Smart Irons** and needle crafting kits from **DMC** and **Loops & Threads**.

“This acquisition allows us to better serve both new and existing customers, respond to rising demand across categories, and build on our momentum as the destination for creating and celebrating in North America,” said Michaels CEO **David Boone** in the announcement.

Preparing for an Explosion in Crafting Demand

Michaels is not merely reacting; it’s proactively shifting to meet evolving consumer interests. Over the past year, there has been a noticeable increase in online searches for **fabric** and **sewing** on Michaels.com, prompting the company to ramp up its offerings. Currently, they are expanding the fabric assortment in over **680 stores** and aim to roll out similar improvements in **280 more locations** this year.

In addition to fabric, Michaels is set to boost its **yarn selection by 25%** this year, launching **60 new Loops & Threads yarns** in stores and online. Furthermore, beloved Joann brands such as **Big Twist Value Plus**, **Big Twist Twinkle**, and others will soon be back in stock, allowing customers to find familiar favorites along with exciting new offerings.

The Crafting Landscape Post-Joann

After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2025 and subsequently closing all of its **800 locations**, Joann left a notable void in the crafting market. However, Michaels is strategically positioning itself to fill this gap.

Since the acquisition announcement in early May, Michaels has developed a **dedicated landing page** for former Joann customers, simplifying their shopping experience and ensuring they can easily navigate through the expanded product range.

Welcoming New Customers into the Michaels Family

“We’re honored to have the opportunity to welcome Joann customers into our creative community and are committed to delivering the selection, value, and inspiration they are looking for at Michaels,” Boone emphasized, highlighting the company’s commitment to customer satisfaction.

As Michaels gears up for this monumental transformation, the crafting community can look forward to an **expanded selection** of high-quality products that cater to every crafting need—from sewing and quilting to all things yarn.

In this new era, Michaels is not just a retailer; it’s becoming a **hub of creativity** where enthusiasts can gather, share ideas, and dive into a world of crafting possibilities.
