Community Unites Against Theft: The Fight for Ava Castillo
A shocking incident has left the Belton community reeling as a young man was caught on surveillance camera brazenly stealing money from a donation box meant for 19-year-old Ava Castillo, who is courageously battling stage four brain cancer.
The Daring Heist at Bush’s Chicken
In an unfortunate turn of events, the donation box at Bush’s Chicken on Lake Road was compromised when security footage revealed a man pilfering funds while the employees were distracted. Ava’s mother was en route to collect the donations, making this act of theft all the more disheartening.
Community Leader’s Response
Shelby Reyes, the owner of Bush’s Chicken, expressed her disbelief and anger at this violation. “What happened was an evil thing. They wanted me to stand still, and I wasn’t going to. It only gave me the motivation to keep running more for Ava,” she stated passionately.
Reyes isn’t just an observer; she’s been a driving force in gathering support for Ava. Having seen Ava at Baylor Scott & White Hospital, where she’s hospitalized, Reyes commended her strength: “She would have to take breaks and sit down, that just showed me her strength. Before she even knew, she was a fighter. She was placed here for a reason because her spirit is true.”
Ava’s Ongoing Battle
Ava’s journey has been incredibly challenging. Currently undergoing radiation treatments, she relies on a feeding tube and breathing machine. Reyes believes in Ava’s resilience, saying, “I can’t wait to see the things God has in store for her.”
In spite of the setback caused by the theft, the outpouring of support from the community has not dwindled. Reyes noted that another donation box has been set up, and patrons continue to give generously.
Faith and Community Resilience
In a remarkable statement of faith, Reyes declared, “God is going to heal her, and she’s going to be the miracle that shows people that God is real.” Her optimism extends beyond local supporters; Reyes believes that Ava’s spirit will inspire many to reconsider their beliefs.
As the community rallies to support Ava, donations are still being accepted at Bush’s Chicken on Lake Road, where customers are reminded that every dollar counts in this fight.
