The Impact of Naming: A Transformative Opportunity
This naming decision, which was approved by the University of Missouri Board of Curators on June 26, 2025, represents a one-time opportunity to elevate the educational experience for countless UMSL students, ensuring they receive the assistance and resources needed to thrive.
A College Designed for a Brighter Future
The Ed G. Smith College of Business is set to reach unparalleled levels of distinction both regionally and nationally. With an expanded philanthropic investment, UMSL aims to:
- Increase student scholarships and broaden access to higher education;
- Enhance student success through experiential learning and study abroad programs;
- Strengthen community innovation and workforce excellence.
Voices of Leadership
“We cannot overstate the power and reach of this moment for our university and our region,” said Chancellor Kristin Sobolik. “Ed Smith’s remarkable success and enduring generosity exemplify the core values of UMSL — resilience, innovation, and a commitment to community. The Ed G. Smith College of Business will empower future generations to build impactful careers that strengthen the economic landscape of St. Louis and beyond.”
From Student to Leader: The Ed G. Smith Journey
Ed G. Smith’s connection to UMSL is rooted in his own journey of perseverance and transformation. Born in St. Louis and the first in his family to attend college, Smith attributes his success to his time at UMSL, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Following his education, he founded American Direct Marketing Resources in 1983, which has grown to become a nationally recognized direct response advertising agency.
An Unwavering Commitment to Education
Smith’s philanthropic efforts over the past two decades are a testament to his belief in the power of education. “I believe in the opportunities that education creates,” he stated. “UMSL laid the foundation for my success, and I am honored to help future business leaders find their paths.”
The College’s Legacy and Future Potential
UMSL’s College of Business serves as a pillar of academic excellence and regional workforce development, boasting over 30,000 alumni, more than 80% of whom remain in the St. Louis area. Recognized as the No. 1 educator for the region’s professional workforce, UMSL is dedicated to creating pathways of success for its students.
A Nationally Recognized Leader
The college holds prestigious accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business in both business and accounting — a distinction that less than 2% of business schools worldwide can claim. With a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate programs, including top-ranked offerings in online MBA, international business, cybersecurity, and supply chain analytics, the college aims to meet students where they are, supporting those balancing their academic, work, and family commitments.
A New Era of Excellence
Under the guidance of Dean Shu Schiller, the Ed G. Smith College of Business is embarking on a bold new era focused on student persistence, employer engagement, and abundant career-building opportunities. “Our faculty and staff are driven by a sincere desire to ensure every business student succeeds,” Schiller affirms. “This investment will transform the learning experience across multiple dimensions, from coursework to transformative study abroad experiences.”

As UMSL embarks on this exciting journey, a public celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place in August to commence the 2025-26 academic year — a fitting tribute to Ed G. Smith’s enduring legacy and the bright futures of countless students.
