Exploring the Future: Akihiko Sadaka and ASICS’ Groundbreaking VR Game ‘DISC’

In the dynamic intersection of fitness and technology, Akihiko Sadaka, the Chief Digital Officer at ASICS, unveils a visionary project that combines virtual reality with physical activity: the engaging new game, DISC. This cutting-edge VR experience is designed to promote health and fitness through enjoyable gameplay, and it promises to be a game-changer in the digital fitness arena.

A Vision Born from Opportunity

Reflecting on the impact of the 2023 international sports event in Tokyo, Sadaka notes, "There was worldwide attention around Esports incorporating digital technology, attracting interest from all corners, especially the younger generation." Recognizing a unique opportunity, ASICS sought to redefine esports by integrating movement and physical activity into the virtual space, cultivating both mental and physical health.

The Purpose of ‘DISC’

Sadaka emphasizes that ASICS takes a customer-centric approach in developing technology. "The goal of this DISC content is not to directly link with our existing shoe and apparel sales," he states, "but to create an immersive environment for users to enjoy physical activity." The foundation of DISC is simple: bring people together through fun, physical experiences, and make fitness accessible.

The Evolution of VR Technology

As VR technology continues to evolve, Sadaka envisions a future where affordable, lightweight, and smarter VR headsets enable more people to enjoy DISC. This initiative not only aims to enhance ASICS’ connection with a broader audience but also encourages new customers to explore the company’s extensive range of athletic products—eventually driving them toward shoes and apparel purchases.

Expanding the Digital Universe

This summer, ASICS plans to launch digital goods, including virtual shoes and apparel for avatars within DISC. This strategic move aims to expand its community of players interested in virtual sports. Sadaka expresses optimism for the future: "We expect a growing number of customers to enjoy virtual sports in the immersive VR environment."

A Sneak Peek into ‘DISC’

I had the opportunity to experience DISC with the Meta Quest 3S headset. Despite being in its early stages, the game surprisingly delivered a polished experience. The art style is vibrant and engaging; while the overall aesthetics may not capture the neon noir flair synonymous with Tron, they perfectly suit a sports game setting.

Gameplay Feedback

One notable observation was a minor collision detection issue, where it felt like I had blocked an opponent’s disc, only to see it score. This could easily be tweaked in future updates by adjusting the size of virtual hands or the goal itself. However, it’s worth noting that as an early build, there’s ample room for improvement.

Why Meta Quest?

Why did ASICS choose to collaborate with Meta Quest for DISC? Sadaka explains, "Meta Quest is the world’s largest producer of VR headsets." The aim is simple: maximize global reach and encourage people to engage in physical activity through VR. This partnership aligns seamlessly with ASICS’ mission to enhance both mental and physical well-being using innovative digital technologies.

The Path Ahead: An International Tournament?

Looking towards the future, Sadaka mentions the potential for hosting an international DISC tournament within the VR realm. The intent is to foster an environment where physically engaging sports can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of athletic experience—democratizing fitness in a virtual context.
