APS Food Drive: Spring Into Action Against Hunger

Addressing the Growing Needs of Students

Each year, as the holidays approach, New Mexico’s largest public school district, Albuquerque Public Schools (APS), mobilizes its community to combat hunger among students. This year, however, the urgency for support is greater than ever, prompting the first-ever "Spring Into Action" food drive aimed at aiding the estimated 3,500 homeless students within the district.

A Call for Help

This initiative was spurred by an urgent message from the McKinney-Vento Program, a vital partner in supporting low-income families. APS Activities Director Leslie Coe responded without hesitation, stating, “It’s been increasing since the COVID numbers. So when they called and said they need more food, it wasn’t a matter of what time it was; we just jumped on to help.”

The Heart of the Matter: What’s Needed?

To successfully combat hunger, APS has identified essential items that are critically needed for the food drive. Donations of non-perishable food items are crucial, especially those that can be easily stored and transported. Here’s a quick list of the most needed donations:

  • Cheese
  • Packaged nuts
  • Applesauce
  • Beef jerky
  • Beans
  • Ramen noodles
  • Trail mix

How to Contribute

Want to make a difference? Participating in the Spring Into Action food drive is simple! Donations will be accepted on Saturday, April 27th, from 9 AM to 3 PM at the AFL-CIO Professional Development Complex. Students will be on hand to assist with unloading and processing donations, making it a community effort where your contributions resonate deeply.

Join the Movement

This spring drive is a unique opportunity for community members to join together in support of our most vulnerable students. By giving, you’re not just donating food; you’re nurturing hope and providing sustenance.
