Brown Baseball Faces Tough Losses in Doubleheader Against Cornell
Ithaca, N.Y. — A Heartbreaking Day on the Diamond
The Brown Bears baseball team faced a challenging doubleheader against Cornell this past Saturday, suffering back-to-back losses that left fans and players alike reeling. The Bears fell 9-6 in the first game and experienced an unusual turn of events in game two, ultimately losing 13-10 due to unforeseen weather conditions.
Game 1: A Slow Build to Heartbreak
Cornell's Early Takeoff
In the first game, the Big Red started strong, jumping out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the second inning, all while compiling merely two hits. Despite the odds stacked against them, the Bears showcased their resilience. They responded with a spirited performance, scoring two runs in the third inning thanks to a powerful double from Mika Petersen.
Brown Fights Back
Trailing 7-2 by the fourth inning, the Bears rallied with a determined two-run fifth inning, credited to Nathan Brasher's double and a run-scoring passed ball. They kept the momentum going with another two runs in the sixth, narrowing the gap to just one run, but it wasn't enough. The Big Red sealed the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, maintaining a tight grip on the lead and keeping the Bears scoreless for the final three innings.
Key Players:
Six players recorded singles in the first game, showcasing a collective effort despite the defeat.
Game 2: A Game of What-Ifs
An Explosive Start
Game two presented an entirely different set of circumstances. The Big Red once again jumped ahead, posting five runs in the first inning, but Brown refused to back down. The Bears clawed back with three runs in the second inning, featuring a key single from Mark Henshon and a thrilling safety squeeze play executed by Boree.
The Rollercoaster Fifth Inning
By the end of the fifth inning, Brown achieved a remarkable comeback, scoring five runs and taking a 9-8 lead. The highlight? A stunning three-run homer from DJ Dillehay, which electrified the Bears’ dugout.
But just as Brown began to gain ground, Cornell responded with two unearned runs in the bottom of the same inning, regaining the lead. The game swung back and forth as Brown tied it again in the sixth before Cornell pushed ahead with two more runs in the seventh.
A Foggy Finish
As the Bears mounted an impressive 10-run inning in the eighth, they appeared poised to steal the victory. However, with one out remaining and the team still batting, thick fog and darkness set in, abruptly halting the game. In a disappointing twist of fate, the score reverted to the beginning of the eighth, handing Cornell a 13-10 victory.
Standout Performers:
In the second game, Miles Newsome and DJ Dillehay both hit home runs, while Alex Benevento reached base safely six times, including five walks throughout the day.
Looking Ahead: A New Opportunity
The Bears will return home for an ambitious eight-game homestand, with their next challenge set for this Tuesday. They face Bryant at Attanasio Family Field, and first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m., with coverage available on ESPN+.
