Bay Area Unites for Myanmar-Thailand Earthquake Relief: Community Fundraises with Heart

In the wake of the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand, the spirit of compassion and community has ignited in the San Francisco Bay Area. Local businesses and community organizations are mobilizing efforts to support those affected by this tragic natural disaster.

The Impact of the Earthquake: A Day of Devastation

Images emerging from Mandalay, a city approximately 30 miles from the quake's epicenter, paint a harrowing picture of destruction. Local resident Tin Win shares that his cousin's home suffered severe damage: walls crumbled and others bore massive cracks. "Everything fell off. They felt serious shaking during the earthquake," Win recalls, echoing the sentiments of fear and uncertainty felt by many.

Additionally, Jason Hu from the Myanmar Cultural and Community Center emphasizes the dire condition in the affected regions, stating, "The situation is really horrible. It's like a disaster zone." The plea for help grows louder as families struggle to find their loved ones amidst the chaos.

Community Fundraisers in Action

The Bay Area’s response was swift, with a fundraiser held in Union City this past Sunday, where attendees celebrated their heritage through music and camaraderie. A band resonated with heartfelt tunes, reflecting the longing and heartbreak felt by many torn from their homelands. Valerie Sheibels, who grew up near Mandalay, expressed her shock as she anxiously awaits news about her family: "I pray to the gods."

Collective Efforts for Relief

The Myanmar Community and Cultural Center has emerged as a cornerstone for fundraising efforts, galvanizing support as community members unify for earthquake relief. "The whole community is coming together to help with the cause of earthquake relief," remarks Wai Phyo from the center.

Efforts include the sale of delicious Burmese cuisine to raise funds, illustrating the profound connection between food, culture, and charity.

Challenges Ahead: Navigating Bureaucracy for Aid

Unfortunately, getting aid to those in desperate need poses significant obstacles. The military-controlled government has barred humanitarian relief agencies from entering, complicating efforts to deliver much-needed support. "We have contact with grassroots aid organizations to get help effectively," Phyo states, highlighting the need for innovative solutions to reach those affected.

Unity Beyond Borders: Support from the Thai Community

Not to be outdone, the Thai community in San Francisco is also step up in solidarity. Osha Thai Restaurant, located along the Embarcadero, is collaborating with other local businesses to provide assistance. Sirapa Buasuk, an employee of the restaurant, recounts seeing photographs of damage that hit close to home. "The crack across the room in the condominium is alarming," she notes.

Through their joint efforts, local businesses are raising awareness and facilitating contributions to help victims of this natural disaster. “We work with an organization called 'Home Help Healing.' The owner of our restaurant also donated some money. You don’t have to send money—your spirit matters too,” Buasuk urges, as she encourages patrons to offer their support in any form.

Get Involved: How You Can Help

The need for assistance is immense and ongoing. GoFundMe has also joined the fight, launching campaigns to gather funds for the earthquake victims. For those who want to lend a helping hand, visit their GoFundMe page for further details.

The Heartfelt Call for Support

Local leaders, including Union City Mayor Gary Singh, are extending their resources, stating, "There's so much need out there, from medicine to clothes… I’m going to talk with Congressman Swalwell to see if we can help them out anyway we can." Efforts continue to evolve, illustrating that even across thousands of miles, a community can come together to render support and assistance in times of dire need.

In the face of tragedy, the communities of the San Francisco Bay Area stand as a beacon of hope for those grappling with sorrow across the globe. Together, they send not just monetary support but also a heartfelt connection to those suffering, proving that love knows no boundaries.
