West Virginia State University (WVSU) has announced the exciting appointment of Whitney Bays as the new head coach of the women’s basketball team. Known for her dynamic coaching strategies and strong emphasis on academic excellence, Bays is set to invigorate the team and drive it to new heights.
A Proven Track Record of Success
Whitney Bays brings a wealth of experience and success to WVSU. Most recently, she served as the assistant coach at Memphis University (2023–present), where she was pivotal in developing both post players and guards. Her duties included managing the team’s recruiting strategies, collaborating on in-game tactics, and creating detailed film breakdowns. Under her guidance, standout players flourished, including Alashia Smith, recognized as an AAC All-Newcomer, and Tilly Boler, a top shooting guard who earned First Team All-Conference honors.
Coaching Milestones and Achievements
Before joining Memphis, Bays was instrumental as an assistant coach at Gardner-Webb University (2022–2023). Here, she oversaw game plans and player development that led to historic achievements for the program, including:
- Big South Championship
- An undefeated 21-0 conference record (the first in school history)
- A long-awaited NCAA Tournament appearance, the school’s first since 2010
During this tenure, the team not only boasted a 29-5 overall record but also secured multiple program milestones, showcasing Bays’ ability to cultivate a thriving basketball environment.
High School Success and Player Development
Bays’ coaching journey began at Huntington High School (2019–2022), where her strategic oversight contributed to back-to-back Class 4A State Championships in 2020 and 2023. Under her leadership, the team achieved a remarkable 24-1 record in 2023 and produced accolades such as the MSAC Player of the Year. Her commitment to players’ academic success was evident, as she proactively supported their education by organizing study sessions and engaging with teachers.
A Star Player Turned Coach
Bays’ impressive playing career further strengthens her qualifications. As a two-time Gatorade West Virginia Player of the Year at Huntington High School, she led her team with an average of 24.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game in her senior year. At Purdue University, she earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors and established school records, including a season-high of 304 rebounds. Moreover, Bays played professionally across five countries, achieving accolades such as a league championship and League MVP in Puerto Rico.
Academic Excellence and Leadership
Bays holds a degree in Sociology and Business from Purdue University (2015) and continues to stress the importance of balancing athletics with academics, which aligns perfectly with WVSU’s mission.
