If there’s anyone who embodies the spirit of a true fashion innovator, it’s Annalisa Guthrie, an extraordinary talent who has taken the fashion world by storm with her breathtaking designs. Known to her growing fan base as Annaixe, she has become a viral sensation for her remarkable ability to transform unconventional materials into exceptional fashion statements.
Breaking Free from Tradition
“In essence, I never felt truly inspired by traditional sewing techniques, and liberating myself from those constraints opened a door to boundless creativity,” Guthrie shared with The Sunday Gleaner. Having burst onto the style scene a little over a decade ago, this costume designer is not just changing how we view carnival attire; she’s redefining it altogether. After honing her skills in fashion design at the University of Technology, Annaixe has woven her unique narrative into the fabric of mas (masquerade culture).
While Annaixe cherished the chance to create stunningly uniform sections for road marches, she eventually embarked on a journey of self-discovery, entering what she affectionately calls her “me era.” This phase prompted her to delve into a more luxurious and creative expression of her craft, allowing her to pay homage to what truly inspires her.
Beyond Carnival: A New Canvas
“I adore crafting carnival costumes, but the desire to explore beyond that was undeniable. I wanted to push the boundaries that usually define costume design,” she explains. This quest for avant-garde expressions has led to the birth of material magic that is exclusively Annaixe.
The Beginning of Upcycling Magic
Last November, a simple request to friends for old flannels transformed into something revolutionary. Annaixe turned these discarded items into a chic skirt set that captivated her followers online—a moment that was just the tip of the iceberg.
By Christmas, while most were scouring store aisles, Guthrie chose to create art from poinsettia decorations, constructing a dazzling red ensemble. “In that moment, I didn’t think of recording the process; I was merely captivated by the creativity,” she recalls. The results of that endeavor, however, compelled her to share her journey, sparking a wave of inspiration among her followers.
Roped in Creativity: A Turning Point
With an eye for innovative shapes and lines, Annaixe composed a stunning look from strung beads and rope, leaving onlookers in awe. “This was pivotal for me. The first video of that creation went viral, igniting a flame of ambition within me. I realized that what I was doing had a much larger significance,” she said.
Guthrie’s daring designs kept her audience on their toes—she expanded her repertoire to include a striking black-and-white tape look and a stunning dress inspired by phone book pages. Just when it seemed her creativity couldn’t reach new heights, Annaixe dazzled everyone with a head-turning gown made from paper towels.
Unleashing a New Creative Process
This exhilarating journey didn’t just deepen her engagement with her audience; it also prompted personal growth. “Sketching was never part of my process, but now I find myself carrying my iPad everywhere to note down all the ideas pouring in,” she shares. “Bringing these visual concepts to life is simply the icing on the cake.”
Inspiration comes from many places, including fashion icons such as Schiaparelli, Alexander McQueen, Stéphane Rolland, and Iris Van Herpen. Now, her work is significantly influenced by the bold fashion statements of drag queens, further contributing to her dynamic style evolution.
The Road Ahead: A Visionary Future
With a vision as vast as her imagination, Annaixe aims to take her work to the next level, dreaming of having exhibitions showcasing her pieces while crafting haute couture for prestigious events like the Met Gala. Her next project? A vibrant collection for the Yard Mas Carnival in Jamaica, capturing the essence of grace, strength, and resilience.
Her wisdom for aspiring designers is refreshingly simple: “Trust yourself and the process. If you find joy in what you create, that’s what matters most.” Each piece embodies her passion, and Annaixe encourages others to embrace their authenticity—"The right people will always gravitate toward true artistry," she asserts.
