A Vision Born From Necessity

Two decades ago, Kevin Harron faced a frustrating reality: the right restaurant to accommodate his gluten allergy simply didn’t exist. A seasoned executive with illustrious stints at Outback Steakhouse and Legal Sea Foods, he decided to take matters into his own hands. In 2005, Burtons Grill & Bar was born, a concept designed not only to serve gluten-free dishes but also to cater to various other food allergies, including nuts and dairy.

Expansion with Purpose

Since its inception, Burtons Grill & Bar has steadily expanded along the East Coast, with its 23rd location opening recently on Lancaster Avenue in Wayne, right next to Minella’s Diner. The transformation of the restaurant space—once a Chili’s—into a welcoming haven is nothing short of remarkable. With a 24-seat U-shaped bar and an inviting patio that can accommodate two dozen guests, the ambiance is as inviting as the menu.

An Inviting Atmosphere

Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by live trees and nature scenes painted on the walls, creating a warm and vibrant atmosphere. There’s even a striking glass wine tower nestled into the unique layout of the dining area, adding a touch of elegance. According to Burtons’ CEO, John Haggai, the restaurant aims to create a space where patrons can dine comfortably, whether dressed casually or in formal attire.

An Upscale Yet Allergy-Conscious Menu

The menu at Burtons Grill & Bar is undeniably upscale, starting with tantalizing steaks—including an 8-ounce filet, a 12-ounce New York strip, and a 14-ounce 28-day-aged ribeye, all priced in the $40s. Fans of seafood will love the crab cakes ($39.50) and the crab-crusted haddock, which celebrates Burtons’ New England heritage at just $38. The array of options extends to sandwiches, soups, salads, and bowls, ensuring something for every palate.

A Commitment to Allergy Safety

Most importantly, nearly every dish is marked with the letters “GF” for gluten-free, and certain items even feature “GFV,” indicating they can be prepared gluten-free upon request. During a recent tasting, the gluten-free rotini served with chicken Milanese Alfredo was virtually indistinguishable from conventional pasta, while the panko-crusted chicken proved to be delectably crunchy and flavorful.

Burtons takes food allergies seriously. With brioche buns and wheat pasta being the only sources of gluten, the kitchen employs color-coded cutting boards and sanitizes workstations to prevent cross-contamination. Cheeses are melted separately to accommodate those with dairy allergies, securing Burtons’ status as a foodie sanctuary.

Future Growth and Convenience

"We’ve waited years to find this spot,” Haggai shares. He acknowledges that while King of Prussia offers numerous dining options, Burtons aims to evoke a neighborhood charm that feels more suburban. Looking ahead, the restaurant is also planning to roll out takeout service, complete with a dedicated counter and side entrance for added convenience.

Additionally, Burtons plans to expand its footprint, with new locations set to open in Doylestown’s Barn Plaza development and a forthcoming venue in Collegeville.
