Gaffes, Gaffs, and Gahs: The Return of Carrie and Her Crew

About two years ago, I found myself reviewing the first episode of season two of And Just Like That… As a devoted fan of Sex and the City, I adored the sharp dialogue, fabulous friendships, and iconic fashion that defined the original series. However, my initial feelings about the revival were mixed at best. I closed that review with the rather harsh sentiment:

‘Life’s too short not to try something new,’ coos Carrie over her poached fecking egg. It’s also too short to watch this ever again.

Yet here I am, unable to resist the pull of nostalgia. I eagerly tuned in for season three’s premiere, holding onto the hope that it might finally reclaim the brilliance of its predecessor. Spoiler alert: I was incredibly wrong. Buckle up, darling readers—here’s what you need to know about the rollercoaster ride that is the latest episode.

A Nostalgic Yet Troubling Reunion

The episode kicks off with Carrie sending a vintage postcard of old New York to Aidan, reminding us of the show’s roots. After Big’s heartbreaking passing last season, Carrie rekindles her romance with Aidan, leading to some significant changes—like selling her iconic apartment and buying a giant house in Gramercy Park. Talk about a real estate makeover, right?

However, their ‘happily ever after’ takes a sudden detour. Aidan, affectionately dubbed Country Lurch, drops the bombshell that he wants to take a step back from their relationship to focus on his troubled teenage son. Yes, you heard that right—Carrie is being asked to go on a five-year hiatus, during which she can just sit tight and wait for Aidan’s family drama to resolve.

The "Five-Year Agreement"

Let’s unpack that for a moment. Five years? For someone in her mid-50s, Carrie might as well have signed up for a retirement home at that point. What on earth was Aidan thinking? My sympathies lie with Carrie, who’s left wondering about what the next half-decade holds for her romantic life. Will she only have Werther’s Originals to keep her company?

Naturally, the prospect of a five-year dormancy doesn’t sit well with Aidan—the moment he downs a few beers, he’s back on the phone, sliding into Carrie’s DMs for an impromptu meetup. The ensuing chaotic scene is one for the books, featuring Carrie being more interested in her cat—yes, an actual feline named Shoe—than in Aidan’s hijinks.

The Supporting Cast’s Chaotic Lives

And what about the rest of our beloved characters?

Miranda has a quirky grin now that she identifies as a lesbian but struggles to find success in the single scene. Apparently, she managed to run up a bar tab of $37 on mocktails during her last outing—a feat that would barely get you a second round in many cities!

In a twist of fate, she meets Mary, who turns out to be a virgin and a nun—but wait, it gets better: she’s also a TOURIST. The writers’ attempt at jests surrounding “Virgin Mary” puns falls flat, revealing more about their pacing than the humor.

Charlotte’s Outrageous Storyline

Then we have Charlotte, who takes her new dog, named Richard Burton, way too seriously, insisting he’s a “sweet baby angel.” To be honest, this bulldog looks more like a painted monster than a cherished pet. The excessive airtime devoted to him is baffling—seriously, it’s more than I bargained for!

And as for Lisa, she faces the pressure of hosting a party to make her husband seem “cool” as he campaigns for city comptroller. I cannot help but raise my eyebrows at a guy named Herbert trying to project “coolness.” The irony is palpable.

Seema’s Fiery Ending

Closing the show, we see Seema, who makes an impulsive decision to burn her mattress after feeling ignored by her beau. Losing her hair in the process? That’s brutal! This situation perfectly encapsulates the rollercoaster of emotions the characters go through, showcasing their ups and downs in relationships.

Final Thoughts: Will I Tune In Again?

I must admit, while I started the episode with high hopes, I found myself Googling ‘how to bleach your eyeballs’ by the end. And yet, something about this chaotic mix keeps me coming back for more.

Will I tune in next week? Absolutely. After all—I’m an optimist at heart, and maybe, just maybe, the next episode will surprise me in all the right ways.
