CMU Welcomes Harlan Teller as New VP of University Communications and Chief Marketing Officer
Central Michigan University (CMU) is excited to announce the appointment of Harlan Teller as the new Vice President of University Communications and Chief Marketing Officer. This significant move, revealed by President Neil MacKinnon, will take effect on August 1, 2025. With a wealth of experience in marketing and communications, Teller is poised to elevate CMU’s strategic initiatives and visibility.
A Proven Track Record
Harlan Teller brings decades of expertise in public relations and higher education marketing, previously serving as the Chief Marketing Officer at Northern Arizona University. There, he excelled in brand positioning, creative development, and website management. His efforts were instrumental in aligning marketing initiatives with enrollment management, a vital area for modern universities.
President MacKinnon expressed confidence in Teller’s capabilities, stating, “As CMU embarks on the development of our strategic enrollment management plan, we knew we needed an experienced communicator and marketer who could help us deliver on our goals and priorities.” Teller’s unique skill set will notably enhance CMU’s mission to position itself as a "university of first choice."
Experience Across Institutions
Before his role at Northern Arizona University, Teller served as Vice President for Enrollment Management, Marketing, and Communications at Northern Illinois University. There, he focused on harmonizing marketing efforts with institutional goals, demonstrating a commitment to student engagement and institutional success.
In Teller’s own words, “I am excited and optimistic about this role at CMU because the university has chosen to pursue a purpose and a message of career preparedness, accessibility, and value for its students.” The emphasis on providing a tangible return on investment for prospective students aligns perfectly with CMU’s designation as an Opportunity University. Teller believes that "we have a great story to tell about student and alumni success."
A Rigorous Selection Process
MacKinnon highlighted that Teller was chosen after a thorough nationwide search initiated earlier this year, following the departure of former VP/CMO John Veilleux. This deliberate selection process underscores CMU’s commitment to finding top-tier talent to further enhance its reputation and outreach.
A Rich Background in Public Relations
Before venturing into higher education, Harlan Teller enjoyed a successful career in the private sector, holding senior roles at major public relations firms, including Burson Marsteller, Hill and Knowlton, and FTI Consulting. He has provided strategic guidance to global brands such as McDonald’s, Duracell, and Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, establishing himself as a leader in reputation management.
Recognized for Excellence
Throughout his career, Teller has garnered numerous accolades for his leadership and strategic communication efforts. He was named PR Strategist of the Year by Inside PR in 1996 and recognized as the PR Professional of the Year by the Chicago chapter of the Public Relations Society of America in 2017. His involvement extends to several volunteer leadership roles, including with the Council for PR Firms and the Center for Economic Progress.
Forward Together
President MacKinnon concluded, “Harlan’s career demonstrates his commitment to the profession and to the values outlined in CMU’s Leadership Standards. We look forward to welcoming him into our community and engaging him in our vital work.”
With Harlan Teller at the helm of University Communications, CMU is well-positioned to enhance its marketing strategies, engage prospective students, and solidify its status within the higher education landscape.
