Colston Loveland: From Idaho Roots to NFL Stardom

The Journey Begins: A Family Tradition in Idaho

Two days before one of the most significant milestones of his life, Colston Loveland returned to his roots in Gooding, Idaho, where he partook in a cherished family ritual: branding calves. Flanked by loved ones at his aunt and uncle’s home, Loveland embraced this time-honored tradition, reinforcing the bonds that shaped him into the athlete he is today.

A Momentous Draft Day

On that fateful Thursday, Loveland walked into that familiar house once more, this time surrounded by a community that had nurtured his dreams. The anticipation was palpable as he learned he had been selected by the Chicago Bears with the 10th overall pick in the NFL Draft. This moment was not just a personal victory; it was a testament to the support from everyone back home.

“I think it’s a blessing to come from there,” Loveland reflected. “I learned a lot of lessons and it’s going to take me a long ways.”

Small-Town Beginnings, Big-Time Ambitions

Hailing from a town of just 3,700 people, 100 miles southeast of Boise, Idaho, Loveland’s journey has been one of hard work and determination. Initially drawn to rodeo, he shifted his focus to football and basketball by fifth grade, quickly distinguishing himself as a top national prospect, ultimately catching the eye of Jim Harbaugh, the former head coach at Michigan.

Rising Through the Ranks at Michigan

At the University of Michigan, Loveland began to realize his potential, emerging as a formidable tight end. Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 248 pounds, he dazzled fans and critics alike. His contributions culminated in a national championship during his sophomore year, laying the groundwork for a promising NFL future.

“It was pretty easy,” Loveland said, reflecting on his transition to playing in front of larger crowds. “At the end of the day, you’re playing football."

Bringing Homegrown Strength to the Bears

Loveland didn’t just bring his skills to Michigan; he also brought the essence of his Idaho home. During meetings with Bears general manager Ryan Poles, Loveland’s impressive hand strength was noted, and he humorously highlighted his blue-collar roots.

“I asked him if he had ever put up a wire fence in Idaho,” he recounted. Poles’ reply? “No, but that explains it.” The labor he undertook back home was reflected in his performance on the field.

A Work Ethic Born from Community

Colston attributes his relentless work ethic to the values instilled by his small-town upbringing.

“Hard work, consistency, just doing the best that you can do, better than anyone else around you,” he stated. “I feel like that correlates well to the football field.”

Leveraging Versatility in Chicago’s Offense

The Bears have high hopes for Loveland’s versatility as they integrate him into head coach Ben Johnson’s offensive scheme. Loveland’s blocking skills and wide receiver-like catching ability could create significant mismatches for opposing defenses.

“It’s versatile,” Poles remarked, emphasizing the potential for a more physical brand of football that Loveland could provide. After recording 117 receptions for 1,466 yards and 11 touchdowns during his three seasons at Michigan, the anticipation for his contributions in Chicago is high.

Recovering and Ramping Up for Success

As Loveland prepares for his NFL career, he faces a challenge ahead. Three months removed from shoulder surgery, he shares that he’s almost fully recovered.

“I have a full range of motion in my shoulder," he said confidently. "I can do everything except lift very heavy objects.”

Once back on the field, Loveland aims to channel the lessons learned throughout his journey, from Gooding to Chicago, and is clearly excited about what lies ahead.

“I love everyone here; the coaching staff is great,” he said. “I’m excited to go win games.”

As Colston Loveland sets his sights on making a mark in the NFL, one thing is certain—his passion and dedication to both his roots and the game will undoubtedly drive him to success in the professional arena.
