For the second consecutive year, this sold-out concert aims to raise a staggering $100,000. This generous funding will be distributed among nearly 30 Title I schools, providing crucial support for after-school programs designed to engage and uplift students in challenging circumstances.
As Bentley, a ninth grader at Hillcrest Junior High, shares, “Without this, I’d probably be laying on my bed right now, not doing anything to be honest with you. But when you come to after school, you get to make new friends and see different people you may never have met before.” This heartfelt admission underscores just how vital these programs are for students looking for a safe and stimulating environment outside of school hours.
Local Heroes Making a Difference
Gabe Smith, a dedicated social studies teacher at Hillcrest Junior High, plays a crucial role in running the after-school program. Serving between 70 to 100 kids daily, the program has over 300 enrolled for the year, demonstrating a continuous demand for such services. With potential cuts to federal grants on the horizon, donations from the Coach Mac Foundation are more critical than ever.
Gabe states, “We have a large refugee population and a significant low-income demographic. Almost 50% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches, often coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.” The need for sustained support is paramount.
Coach Ron McBride: A Legacy of Giving Back
After retiring from coaching the University of Utah football team, Ron McBride founded his foundation about a decade ago, focusing on giving back to the community he loves. “It’s fun to see all these people giving their time and kids enjoying what they’re doing,” Coach McBride reflects on the joy of witnessing community support in action.
A Night to Remember
The foundation gained traction last year when Coach McBride connected with Gabe Elstien, the owner of The Complex. Together, they brought in Ryan Bingham, who graciously waived his performance fee, resulting in a sold-out show that raised tens of thousands for the foundation.
This year’s star is the remarkable Ella Langley, recently crowned Country Music’s New Artist of the Year. Scheduled for Thursday, her performance is anticipated to raise even more funds for the foundation. “Thankfully, we have a lot of people in this community who care about our young people, and they’re willing to support this project,” Coach Mac emphasizes.
A Shift for the Event
Originally slated for an indoor venue, the overwhelming demand for tickets has prompted organizers to move the concert outdoors, where nearly 4,000 tickets have already sold. Every penny raised will directly benefit the Coach Ron McBride Foundation, ensuring that after-school programs at Title I schools across Utah can continue to thrive.
