Exciting Performances at Hill City Twilight: Cox and Cyr Shine

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Virginia No. 25 men’s and women’s track and field teams delivered an exhilarating showcase at the Hill City Twilight held at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Track on Friday, May 2. Aidan Cox and Mark Cyr emerged as stars of the event, each clinching individual wins in their respective events, leaving spectators buzzing with excitement.

Cox and Cyr Stand Out: Event Wins

Mark Cyr’s remarkable achievement in the men’s hammer throw was nothing short of spectacular. He launched himself to a remarkable distance of 63.04m (206-9.75), surpassing his personal best by nearly three meters! Previously sitting at 60.11m (197-2), Cyr’s new record places him ninth all-time in Virginia’s program history and solidifies his status as a top contender among freshmen, now holding the No. 3 spot all-time for his class.

In a thrilling finish, Aidan Cox dominated the men’s 5000-meter invitational, sprinting across the line with an impressive time of 14:06.43. His performance further exemplifies the depth of talent within the Virginia track and field program.

Solid Day in the Distance Events

The excitement didn’t stop there. The distance events showcased more outstanding performances:

  • Stella Kermes rounded out the podium in the women’s 1500-meter invitational, clocking in at 4:22.25. Her strong performance inspired her teammates to also secure top-10 finishes, including:

    • Cate DeSousa finishing sixth with 4:26.85
    • Luci Ilnicki-Lambert who took ninth at 4:30.70
    • Tatum Olesen securing tenth place with 4:37.31
  • In the men’s 800-meter invitational, Tobias L’Esperance led the Cavaliers with a personal best of 1:50.36, finishing fifth. Following closely were:

    • Alex Leath in seventh with 1:50.76
    • James Ford in 11th place with 1:51.84
    • Freshman Alex Valencia celebrated his own personal best, breaking the tape at 1:51.98.
  • On the men’s mile front, Cayden Dyer achieved a stellar fourth place finish, clocking an outdoor best of 4:07.49, showcasing his growth from his indoor personal mark of 4:13.82.

  • Ella Woehlcke made her mark as well, finishing seventh in the women’s 800-meter invitational section with a time of 2:08.14.
