Delaware Historical Society’s Research Library & Archives: A Stunning Restoration Unveiled
The Delaware Historical Society has just unveiled a stunning restoration of its iconic Research Library & Archives building located at 505 N. Market Street in Wilmington. With a newly restored Art Deco façade, this architectural gem is poised to recapture the heart of the community.
A Two-Year Journey of Transformation
For over two years, craftsmen and historians have worked diligently to return this historical site’s exterior to its original splendor. The restoration project has meticulously focused on the building’s façade, doors, and windows, aiming to revive its historic charm.
Key Features of the Restoration
Chief Curator Leigh Rifenburg highlighted some of the most significant aspects of the renovation. “The windows were central to our efforts, and we also took the time to restore the beautiful metal decorative grill work,” she explained. This artistry shines both on the building’s exterior and inside the vestibule, providing visitors with a glimpse into its storied past.
The renovations extend beyond just aesthetics. The work was performed on both the Market Street and Shipley Street sides, revealing and restoring a hidden window that unveils the building’s architectural history.
Future Plans for the Library
But the journey doesn’t stop here. More restoration work is already on the horizon. Rifenburg noted, “We’ve identified several areas that need attention.” Among the key features is the historic skylight, a centerpiece that requires careful restoration. The goal is to bring the paint finishes back to what they would have looked like when the building first opened its doors in 1931.
Archival Treasures Within
This historic building is more than just a pretty façade; it houses over 75% of the Delaware Historical Society’s collection, which includes three million pieces of archival materials—manuscripts, photographs, prints, maps, and invaluable family papers. Each piece tells a unique story that contributes to the understanding of Delaware’s rich history.
A Legacy in the Making
Originally constructed in 1929 for the Artisans’ Savings Bank, the Delaware Historical Society acquired it in 1971. Today, the restored building is not just a library; it’s a gateway to the past, inviting visitors to explore the unique narrative of Delaware.
As the restoration project moves forward, it promises to turn the library into a dynamic hub for historians, students, and the curious at heart. This architectural renaissance serves as a reminder that preserving history is as vital as creating it.
