A Night on the Tarmac: Hundreds of Delta Passengers Stranded in Alabama
When the skies turned stormy, nearly 300 Delta Air Lines passengers found themselves facing an unexpected and uncomfortable night — stranded on the tarmac at Montgomery Regional Airport in Alabama. This experience unfolded last Thursday as two international flights, both originating from Mexico, were diverted due to inclement weather.
The Diversions That Altered Travel Plans
Passengers aboard Flight 1828 from Cabo San Lucas and Flight 599 from Mexico City were en route to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport when severe thunderstorms forced the aircraft to divert to Montgomery around 9:30 p.m.. A Delta spokesperson elaborated, “Flight crews, always looking to ensure the safety of all Delta customers, selected Montgomery, Ala. (MGM) for a diversion point with plans to continue to Atlanta once the weather cleared.”

Unfortunately for the passengers, the Montgomery Regional Airport lacked U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facilities. Consequently, the travelers were unable to disembark and remained on board until customs staffing could be arranged, which didn’t occur until the early hours of Friday.
Customs Complications in Chaotic Conditions
The situation was further complicated by the fact that nearby airports with CBP facilities were also grappling with severe weather. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, for instance, was ruled out due to ongoing thunderstorms and windshear reports. “Flights from international points must arrive at airports with CBP staffing for processing, which was not possible until early Friday morning,” the spokesperson explained.
As the hours dragged on, passengers sat patiently in their seats, awaiting a resolution. Finally, assistance arrived around 5:30 a.m., allowing them to enter the airport before departing for Atlanta at noon.

Apologies and Refunds
In response to the incident, Delta Air Lines offered an official apology and committed to fully refunding each customer’s ticket as compensation for the distress caused by this unexpected overnight stay. “We sincerely apologize to our customers for this experience. We fell short of how we aspire to serve and care for our customers amid thunderstorms in the Southeast U.S.,” the spokesperson stated.
To further mend their relationship with affected travelers, Delta pledged to conduct a thorough review of this incident, indicating their desire to improve operational protocols for handling weather-related diversions in the future.
