Discover the Dance Revolution: Detroit-Style Ballroom in Saginaw

Introduction to a Vibrant Community

BUENA VISTA TOWNSHIP, MI — If you’re seeking an escape from life’s worries, look no further than the infectious rhythm of Detroit-style ballroom dancing—a dynamic trend flourishing in Saginaw. Led by Tyrell Brown, a charismatic bus driver, this unique dance form not only promises fun but also fosters community spirit.

A New Chapter in Dance

In 2023, Brown enhanced his already impressive resume by introducing ballroom dance lessons to Saginaw residents. With the world slowly moving past the gloom of pandemic isolation, these gatherings have transformed into a beacon of hope and connection. While ballroom dancing has historical roots in the area, Brown’s innovative approach has ignited a fresh passion.

The Popularity Surge

Every Tuesday, more than a dozen enthusiastic participants flock to The Epicurean Elks Lounge located at 1704 Veterans Memorial Parkway in Buena Vista Township. Here, they gather for laughter, joy, and dance, with many attendees describing this experience as a lifestyle rather than just a hobby.

What Makes Detroit-Style Unique?

What sets Detroit-style ballroom dancing apart? It’s all about the four-count step routine, which enables dancers to settle their feet to the beat of the music. Brown explains, “It’s not choreographed, but there are certain moves you do.” The style embodies elegance merged with a funky twist, creating a rhythm that’s enjoyable and accessible.

Dance to the Beat of Your Choice

While people often associate ballroom dancing with specific genres, participants can groove to a variety of music. Brown, who first learned to dance to Tevin Campbell’s iconic "Can We Talk," finds that mid-tempo R&B works beautifully for this dance form. However, the dance floor opens up to anything with a beat. Regular attendees even embrace a Tupac song, proving that as long as the rhythm flows, you can enjoy the dance, no matter the genre.

Dance for All Ages

Brown emphasizes that Detroit-style ballroom dancing is inclusive and empowers dancers of all ages. “If you can walk, you can dance,” he assures. His group features participants ranging from children to octogenarians, firmly establishing this dance as a family-friendly environment filled with joy and movement.

Meet the Instructors

Every Tuesday session is led by a talented trio of instructors: Henry Gibbs, Millie Stidhum Gatson, and Leroy Culpepper. Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned dancer, they cater to everyone’s skill levels, ensuring that everyone feels welcome.

Join the Movement

Thinking about joining in on the fun? No prior registration is required—just show up! For a nominal fee of $10 per session, you can immerse yourself in the magic of dance from 6 PM to 8 PM on Tuesdays. No dance partner? No problem! Bring your hard-bottom shoes for a smooth glide across the floor, as Brown suggests.

Connect and Explore

Stay in touch with the growing dance community via their Facebook page, "Saginaw Ballroomers STEPPERS & Hustlers." Here, members share photos and updates about local dance events, enriching the experience for all.

Dancing Beyond the Floors

Brown believes that Detroit-style ballroom dancing shines at various celebrations, including weddings and family gatherings. “If you see a couple really tearing up the dance floor, chances are they’re ballrooming,” he remarks with a smile.
