William, born in 1987 into a Christian family, knew poverty well. Malawi was not just a place where magic thrived; it was also a country plagued by drought and famine. His dreams of studying science in a leading boarding school were suddenly dashed when a devastating famine struck in 2002. With his family’s farm in ruins, he faced the harsh reality of being unable to afford the $80 yearly tuition, forcing him to abandon his education and help his family scavenge for food.
A Journey of Discovery
Undeterred by hardship, William turned to his village library. Against a backdrop of hunger, he immersed himself in books, particularly Using Energy, which ignited his fascination with windmills. Armed with only his curiosity and determination, William took matters into his own hands.
With a fistful of cornmeal for sustenance, a stack of science textbooks, and his creativity, William set out to build a windmill that could generate electricity and pump water to his parched village. Using scrap metal, bicycle parts, and sheer ingenuity, he constructed a machine that would not only power a light in his home but also charge a neighbor’s cell phone. Moreover, his second creation provided a water source crucial for farming.
From Local Hero to Global Inspiration
William’s achievements didn’t go unnoticed. His story spread like wildfire, establishing him as a local hero who “harnessed the wind”. In 2007, venture capitalists learned of his innovations at a conference in Tanzania and stepped in to fund his education. By 2014, William proudly graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Studies, earning a place in the prestigious Sphinx Senior Honor Society.
