Microneedling and Exosome Treatments: Elevate Your Scalp Health

In today’s fast-paced world, scalp health is often overlooked, leading to issues like hair thinning and loss. Lifestyle choices—such as poor sleep, unmanaged stress, smoking, frequent chemical treatments, and inadequate scalp care—play a significant role in this troubling trend.

Understanding the Cause of Hair Loss

“Many young adults today are experiencing hair loss earlier, and much of it can be traced back to poor lifestyle choices,” explains Ms. Kim Fong, the group chief trichologist at Svenson. She emphasizes that neglecting proper scalp care can result in early hair thinning and various scalp issues, which can ultimately affect one’s self-confidence.

While many view hair loss as a cosmetic issue or a natural part of aging, it can often indicate deeper health concerns. If you’re noticing more hair than usual in your brush or clogging your drain, it may be time to seek professional help.

Hair loss manifests in various forms, from mild thinning to complete baldness. The triggers can be multifaceted, including lifestyle choices, hormonal shifts, genetics, and underlying medical conditions.

Common Types of Hair Loss

  • Telogen Effluvium: A temporary shedding triggered by stress, poor nutrition, or hormonal changes, often linked to nutrient deficiencies.
  • Androgenetic Alopecia: Commonly known as male-pattern baldness, this genetic condition affects both men and women.
  • Alopecia Areata: An autoimmune condition that causes sudden bald patches, often triggered by emotional stress or physical trauma.

Ms. Fong underscores a crucial message: your scalp health matters. “Just as plants need healthy soil to grow, your scalp provides the foundation for strong hair,” she explains. Even minor issues like dandruff can escalate if scratching leads to follicle damage.

Boosting Scalp Health with Exosome Treatments

As researchers delve deeper into scalp care, the potential of exosome treatments is becoming increasingly evident. Exosomes are small particles released by cells that facilitate cellular communication. “Exosomes can interact with cells in the scalp,” Ms. Fong notes. Research suggests they may help reduce inflammation, a key component for maintaining a healthy scalp.

Launched in September 2024, Svenson’s Micro-Exo treatment utilizes exosomes to tackle scalp concerns, including signs of aging and stress-related issues. Approved by the Health Sciences Authority, this treatment is suitable for anyone aged 21 and above experiencing hair challenges.

Methodology of Exosome Delivery

Svenson employs two innovative methods to deliver exosomes:

  1. Microneedling: This technique creates tiny channels in the skin, enhancing absorption and triggering the skin’s natural healing response. Ms. Fong asserts that the treatment is generally comfortable, though individuals with sensitive scalps might experience mild discomfort.

  2. Needleless Technique: Utilizing electrical pulses, this FDA-approved method opens microscopic channels for gentler absorption and better circulation. It’s perfect for those seeking a less invasive alternative.

Ms. Fong typically recommends undergoing a series of six to eight sessions, spaced one to two weeks apart for optimal results.

Post-Treatment Care and Expectations

After a microneedling session, you may experience temporary redness or tenderness. While it’s possible to wash your hair after four hours, waiting 24 hours is advisable. To ensure optimal healing, avoid intense activities like swimming, gym workouts, saunas, or prolonged sun exposure for at least three days.

With the needleless approach, restrictions are minimal. Most individuals can return to their regular activities and wash their hair after about four hours.
