Mario Isola, Pirelli’s Racing Director and F1 Chief, recalls their first meeting during preseason testing in Bahrain. Originally, the goal was simply to design a tire for the fictional APXGP team, but it soon evolved into a significant partnership that would shape the film’s authenticity.

“The first step was to understand which kind of tire we had to use,” Isola shared.

Innovative Tire Solutions

The filmmakers faced a unique challenge: the APXGP car, built for actors Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, needed specialized tires to accommodate a more cautious driving style. Initially, Pirelli contemplated creating a bespoke compound. However, they soon discovered that Formula Two tires could suffice.

“F2 tires don’t use tire blankets, so the level of grip generated with the cold tires was enough,” Isola explained.

To ensure authenticity, Pirelli supplied 1,000 tires for the production, rotating between F2 tires for on-track scenes and full-sized F1 tires for garage shots. A small team of engineers worked on set, mirroring their role during actual F1 race weekends.

Lights, Cameras, Tires!

In each pressing scene involving high-stakes racing strategy, Pirelli’s graphics capture the audience’s attention, setting the stage for climactic moments. For instance, when Brad Pitt’s character, Sonny Hayes, finds himself with an extra set of soft tires during a red flag situation, the film expertly weaves tire strategy into a pivotal plot twist.

“I don’t want to spoil the end of the movie, but it was interesting to see the conclusion of the race,” Isola noted.

Expert Commentary for Authenticity

The film’s narrative is further enriched by the presence of renowned Sky Sports commentators David Croft and Martin Brundle. Their authentic commentary captures the technical subtleties of F1 racing while remaining accessible to newcomers.

“They found a very easy language to explain to spectators, and that was vital for the film,” Isola stated.

Director Kosinski emphasized the importance of balancing technical details with entertainment, ensuring that both die-hard fans and casual viewers would remain engaged.

Pirelli: A Marketing Marvel

The impact of “F1: The Movie” extends beyond the screen, promising to boost Formula One’s visibility globally. Pirelli’s branding intricately weaves through the film—visible on car decals, driver suits, and trackside advertisements—mirroring the real-world presence it commands in F1 racing.

“All the teams have the Pirelli logo on the suits of the mechanics and the drivers. We were happy to have it as an integral part of the film,” Isola remarked.
