Oklahomans Can Secure Federal Funds for Storm Shelter Installations Through SoonerSafe Program
Are you an Oklahoman homeowner eager to protect your family from severe storms? The SoonerSafe program is your ticket to financial assistance in installing a safe room on your property. Launched in 2011, this initiative has been a lifesaver for many, helping hundreds of families to invest in safety and peace of mind.
What is the SoonerSafe Program?
The SoonerSafe program aims to provide homeowners with the necessary funds to purchase and install storm shelters, commonly referred to as safe rooms.
How Does the Program Operate?
Here’s how you can get started:
Application: Begin your journey by applying through the Oklahoma Emergency Management (OEM). If you meet the eligibility criteria and are selected, you will receive an email notification.
Confirmation: Respond promptly! Once selected, you have 30 days to confirm your participation in the program.
Installation: After confirmation, the SoonerSafe program will provide a timeframe for getting your safe room installed and submitting necessary documentation.
- Reimbursement: Finally, you will receive your funds through FEMA Hazard Mitigation grants!
Who Qualifies for the Program?
The beauty of this program is its openness to all homeowners, but please note that preference is given to residents in counties affected by 2024 disaster declarations. This includes regions such as:
- Blaine
- Caddo
- Carter
- Craig
- Custer
- Delaware
- Hughes
- Jackson
- Johnston
- Kay
- Lincoln
- Love
- Mayes

- Washita
To be eligible, the safe room must be installed in a single-family home, and you must own both the property and the land on which the safe room will be built.
Financial Benefits of the Program
Thinking about the cost? Selected homeowners can receive up to $3,000 to help with their safe room installation. Please keep in mind that this amount cannot exceed 75% of the total installation cost.
Rebate Processing Timeline
After submitting your required documents, the OEM will conduct a thorough review. They may get in touch for additional information, but once everything is in order, expect to sign a final form that includes details on where to mail your check.
Important: The rebate process can take up to 12 weeks from submission to receiving your funds.
