  • Titanium Dioxide: Used to whiten baked goods and candies, it was banned in 2022 by the EU but remains legal in the U.S.
  • Potassium Bromate: Identified as a carcinogen, this additive has been linked to health concerns since 1990.

Certain nutrients present in whole foods, like omega-3 fatty acids, can mitigate the effects of synthetic chemicals, asserts Dr. Aly Cohen, an integrative rheumatologist. In his observations, Trasande notes, “Processed foods have heavy contact with plastic, which contributes to chronic diseases. A little bit of me dies when I see cucumbers in a plastic container,” urging consumers to choose fresh produce without packaging.

While everyone should strive to limit their exposure to harmful food chemicals, some groups are at a heightened risk. Pregnant women and young children are particularly vulnerable due to their developmental sensitivities. In fact, a research review from California revealed that artificial food dyes adversely affect learning and memory in children.

Dr. Warner emphasizes the need for rigorous research to establish clear cause-and-effect links between food additives and health issues. For now, it is evident that both a healthy diet and the avoidance of harmful additives are vital for overall well-being.
