Remembering Anne Burrell: A Culinary Icon

Anne Burrell, the vibrant and talented chef known for her infectious enthusiasm and passion for food, tragically passed away at the age of 55 in Brooklyn. A staple of the Food Network, she captivated audiences as the host of Secrets of a Restaurant Chef and co-host of Worst Cooks in America.

A Legacy of Culinary Teaching and Joy

In a heartfelt statement, the Food Network expressed, "Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent—teaching, competing, and always sharing the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring. Our thoughts are with Anne’s family, friends, and fans during this time of tremendous loss."

Burrell dedicated the last 14 years as a co-host of Worst Cooks in America, where she brought humor and expertise to the television screen until her recent absence in the latest season.

A Chef with Boundless Experience

Burrell made her mark as a sous-chef to the legendary Mario Batali on Iron Chef, a role she embraced since the show’s inception in 2005. Her culinary journey encompassed prestigious New York restaurants such as Felidia, Savoy, and Centro Vinoteca. In 2011, she showcased her skills as a contestant on the inaugural season of Chopped All-Stars Tournament.

Culinary Appearances and Contributions

Her charm and charisma resonated through various shows, including Rachael Ray, The Kitchen, Guilty Pleasures, and Cutthroat Kitchen. Burrell was a familiar face, not just for her culinary prowess but for her ability to make cooking accessible and enjoyable.

In discussing her philosophy on cooking, she told Tasting Table, "I truly in my heart feel that your food knows how you’re feeling when you cook it and it reacts accordingly. I like to put happy and joy into my food." Her approach was all about unraveling the fear surrounding cooking and emphasizing its joy, stating, "Take the fear factor out of it and put the fun factor in."

Culinary Ventures and Authorship

Burrell’s culinary journey didn’t stop at television. She previously hosted Chef Wanted With Anne Burrell from 2010 to 2013. Born in New York and a proud graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, she took her talents abroad to Italy before establishing her unique restaurant, Phil & Anne’s Good Time Lounge, in Brooklyn in 2017.

Her competitive spirit persisted, as she most recently appeared on Food Network’s House of Knives, which aired in March. Additionally, she authored two celebrated cookbooks: Cook Like a Rock Star and Own Your Kitchen: Recipes to Inspire and Empower.

Advocacy and Giving Back

Beyond her culinary achievements, Burrell was a passionate advocate, serving on the Garden of Dreams Foundation Advisory Board and as a Celebrity Ambassador for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Her efforts extended to the community as a dedicated supporter of City Harvest‘s Food Council.
