Local Food Pantry Makes Tough Choices Amid Funding Cuts
A Crucial Service Faces Reduction
Dunn County, Wis.—In a poignant response to federal funding cuts, Stepping Stones of Dunn County has reluctantly announced a significant reduction in its Food Pantry services. Starting June 30th, the pantry will close its doors on Fridays, limiting accessibility from five days to four each week. Furthermore, the frequency with which households can visit the pantry will now be once every 14 days, instead of the previous allowance of once per week.
Board President Barbara Fagan shared her sentiments, stating, “The pantry is one of the foundations of Stepping Stones services. Making cuts to food available to homes was difficult, but it is proportionate to the current need.” This critical service aims to support over 5,000 unique individuals annually despite these challenging decisions.
The Financial Landscape
This difficult choice comes on the heels of a staggering $150,000 cut in federal funding, primarily affecting pantry operations. Executive Director Corrisa Villeneuve emphasized the urgency of the situation: “This decision was not made lightly. We are operating in a deficit while witnessing an increased demand for our services.”
Stepping Stones has ambitious goals, including the recent opening of its Cairn House, a 20-bed shelter designed to accommodate individuals experiencing homelessness. This initiative, while commendable, has doubled the organization’s budget and strained its resources. Villeneuve pointed out that community support is more vital than ever as the funding received struggles to keep pace with growing needs.
How You Can Help
In these trying times, Stepping Stones is calling on the community to Step Up and contribute to their mission. “We are seeking sustainable donations, such as recurring monthly or annual contributions,” Villeneuve explained. To provide a sense of impact:
- Just $20 a month can supply food to 64 families using the pantry.
- A monthly gift of $50 can provide 600 meals to children facing food insecurity.
Every donation, regardless of size, makes a palpable difference. Your support can directly aid neighbors, friends, and families in need.
