From Side Hustle to 16 Stores: The Inspiring Journey of Retail Entrepreneur Charles Antwi-Boahen

Meet Charles Antwi-Boahen, the visionary founder and CEO of Kab-Fam, an electronics and home appliance retail empire that has expanded from a small side venture to a robust 16-store chain across Ghana. His entrepreneurial journey is nothing short of remarkable, characterized by resilience, creativity, and a dash of innovation in marketing, especially through Facebook ads.

The Roots of a Visionary

In 2012, Charles found himself working as a salesman for an air-conditioning firm in the bustling capital of Accra, Ghana. However, the conventional salary model didn’t suit him; his earnings relied heavily on commissions from hard-to-secure contracts. It was a challenging climate, both economically and professionally.

Spotting Untapped Opportunities in a Stagnant Market

While navigating the demands of his job, Charles identified a gap in the market for split air conditioners—smaller systems ideal for homes and small businesses that his employer didn’t sell. He seized the initiative, forming a partnership with an appliance distributor named Electroland, which was associated with internationally recognized brands like Samsung.

Taking the Leap: A Side Hustle Turns Serious

With newfound opportunities in sight, Charles expanded his offerings beyond air conditioners to include widely-demanded electronics and home appliances like televisions, washing machines, and even mobile phones. His side hustle blossomed as he harnessed online platforms to promote his products, generating impressive daily sales. “When I started dealing with the distributor, everything changed,” he reflects.

The Launch of Kab-Fam: A Risky Gamble

Fast forward to 2014, with one year of success under his belt, Electroland’s founder presented him with a $60,000 interest-free loan to start his own retail business. With the thrill of entrepreneurship coursing through his veins, Charles opened the first Kab-Fam store at Darkuman Junction. Unsure of what the future held, he dove into the venture without retail experience—a true leap of faith.

Facing Adversity: The Power Outage Crisis

Just as he began trading, electricity blackouts hit Ghana hard, sometimes leaving communities without power for up to 24 hours. The timing could not have been worse, as consumer foot traffic plummeted. “It was heart-wrenching,” Charles recalls, describing the sleepless nights he endured while striving to repay his loan amidst the challenges. But instead of retreating, he intensified his focus on digital marketing.

A Facebook-Fueled Comeback

In 2016, Charles discovered the power of Facebook ads. As he experimented with targeted advertising, he noted an astronomical increase in sales. “Sales skyrocketed,” he exclaims. With a recovering power situation in Ghana, Kab-Fam began to flourish.

Creating high-performing Facebook ads wasn’t just about throwing money at the problem; it required strategic targeting and continuous tweaking. “I sleep, eat, drink marketing,” Charles admits, highlighting his commitment to mastering this vital skill.

Expanding Horizons: From One to Sixteen Stores

Empowered by the surge in sales, Kab-Fam expanded its presence to Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest city, followed by multiple outlets across the nation. Today, Kab-Fam operates 16 locations, mixing owned and rented properties, demonstrating an impressive scalability model.

Navigating Economic Challenges

The fluctuating macroeconomic environment posed significant hurdles for Kab-Fam. Between 2022 and 2024, the Ghanaian cedi experienced a sharp decline against the dollar, prompting inflation rates to soar to 40.3%. This economic turmoil hindered plans for substantial expansion. However, with the recent implementation of economic reforms and the currency stabilizing, Charles is optimistic about regaining momentum.

“I hope and pray it goes down further and is sustained,” he says. With a renewed sense of optimism, he believes Kab-Fam is poised to thrive as the economy stabilizes.
