Gamecocks Conclude Weather-Delayed First Day of East Regionals
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (May 29, 2025) – The stage was set, but an unexpected five-hour weather delay threatened to dampen the spirits of the University of South Carolina’s Track & Field team. However, the Gamecock men’s team demonstrated resilience and determination, finishing day one of the NCAA East Regionals with notable achievements: one ticket to Eugene for the NCAA Championships and four other advancements.
Channing Ferguson Takes the Lead for USC
The spotlight shone brightly on Channing Ferguson, who became the first Gamecock to secure a spot in the championship lineup. Competing in the men’s long jump, Ferguson soared to a remarkable distance of 7.47m (24-6.25ft), clinching the final qualifying spot for Eugene. This three-time outdoor All-American is not done yet; he is slated to compete in the high jump on Friday, aiming for dual All-American honors for the second consecutive year.
Setting the Tone Post-Delay
Following the long wait, David Warmington ignited the competition by advancing to the 110-meter hurdle quarterfinals. He clocked in with a time of 13.97 seconds (-0.8), landing him a vital at-large spot and setting the tone for the team’s performance.
Next up, Jaouad Khchina, originally from Morocco, showcased his prowess in the 1500m, finishing as runner-up in his heat with an impressive time of 3:44.02 to secure an automatic spot in the quarterfinals.
Dazzling Performances in the 400m
Josiah Wrice continued to shine in the men’s 400m, triumphing in heat two with a swift 45.91 seconds, reinforcing his automatic qualification into the quarterfinals. Close behind him was Jasauna Dennis, who also made headlines by finishing second in heat six. With a personal best time of 45.92 seconds, Dennis etched his name in the record books, now standing eighth all-time in Gamecock history for the outdoor 400m.
