GCU Battles Hard but Falls to No. 3 USC in Four Sets

LOS ANGELES – In a thrilling encounter at Galen Center, the Grand Canyon men's volleyball team showcased their resilience and skill but ultimately fell short against the formidable No. 3 USC, with set scores of 25-17, 25-18, 17-25, and 25-19. Despite the loss, GCU (14-7, 3-4 MPSF) demonstrated a commendable performance that keeps fans eager for their next matchup.

A Match of Momentum Swings

The match unfolded in a series of momentum shifts, starting with USC establishing an early foothold. The opening set witnessed a fierce battle characterized by ten ties and four lead changes, reflecting both teams’ desire for dominance. The Trojans seized control late in the set, launching a 5-0 run to extend the lead, ultimately securing the first set 25-17.

In the second set, USC continued to dictate the pace, propelled by standout performances from their top scorers. Opposite Jack Deuchar led the charge with a remarkable 20 kills, while Dillon Klein contributed significantly with 18 kills. With a strong early lead, USC cruised to a 25-18 win, leaving the Lopes in search of a spark.

Lopes Rally Back in the Third Set

Determined not to go down without a fight, GCU regrouped and found its rhythm in the third set. The Lopes captured the lead at 20-15, largely thanks to the offensive prowess of Trent Moser, who delivered five kills in this critical frame. Moser’s rallies invigorated the team, allowing GCU to close the set with a 5-2 run, capped off with a kill from Braedon Marquardt and an assist from the reliable Jaxon Herr.

Marquardt not only contributed offensively with 10 kills—hitting an impressive .750—but also anchored the defense with four blocks. Herr demonstrated his playmaking skills with 27 assists and five digs, showcasing why he’s a vital part of the Lopes’ strategy.

USC Regains Control Down the Stretch

Despite a promising turnaround in the third set, the Lopes could not sustain their momentum. The fourth set saw USC jump out to a 9-4 lead, showcasing their ability to adapt and regain control. GCU fought valiantly but ultimately succumbed to the Trojans, who clinched the match with a final score of 25-19.

Nevertheless, GCU's .320 hitting percentage was noteworthy as it represented the highest any team has achieved against USC in the last eight matches, underscoring their competitive spirit and potential for future successes.

Looking Ahead: GCU's Next Challenge

The Lopes will have a chance to redeem themselves soon. Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 5 p.m., when they face off against USC once again.
