AI Could Achieve Human-Like Intelligence By 2030, Raising Concerns About Mankind’s Future

Human-level artificial intelligence, or Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), may emerge as soon as 2030, according to a groundbreaking research paper from Google DeepMind. However, this potential leap in technology comes with alarming implications—specifically the risk of "permanently destroying humanity."

The Potential Perils of AGI

The research underscores the extraordinary impact of AGI, stating, “Given the massive potential impact of AGI, we expect that it too could pose potential risk of severe harm.” The authors caution that existential threats, which could result in the extinction of humanity, are particularly concerning. However, they clarify that the determination of what constitutes "severe harm" is a collective societal responsibility, shaped by shared risk tolerance and our understanding of harm’s implications.

Interestingly, while the paper—co-authored by DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg—acknowledges the potential existential risks of AGI, it refrains from outlining specific scenarios that could lead to human extinction. Instead, the focus is on preventive measures that AI companies, including Google, should implement to mitigate these threats.

Categorizing Risks: A Proactive Approach

The study categorizes the risks associated with advanced AI into four broad categories: misuse, misalignment, mistakes, and structural risks. One key element of their strategy is a proactive approach to prevent misuse, emphasizing the potential dangers when individuals leverage AI for harmful purposes.

Urgency from Leadership

In a recent statement, Demis Hassabis, CEO of DeepMind, highlighted the urgency of addressing these issues. He emphasized that AGI—intelligent enough to rival human capabilities—will likely begin to materialize in the next five to ten years. To navigate this emerging landscape safely, he proposed the establishment of a UN-like organization to oversee AGI development, akin to CERN, but for artificial intelligence.

Hassabis stated, “I would advocate for a kind of CERN for AGI, an international research-focused collaboration aimed at ensuring safe advancements in AGI.” He further elaborated on the need for an IAEA-like institute to monitor dangerous projects and a global coalition to guide the ethical use and deployment of these technologies.

Understanding AGI: The Next Frontier in AI

What exactly is AGI? This iteration of artificial intelligence transcends conventional AI, which is typically designed for specific tasks. AGI seeks to possess intelligence comparable to human cognition, allowing it to adapt and apply knowledge across diverse fields. In essence, an AGI would not merely perform isolated tasks but would develop a broad understanding and capability similar to that of a human.

As we stand on the brink of this potential technological revolution, the conversation around AGI grows ever more crucial. The advancements made in the next decade could have profound implications, raising questions about what it means to be human and how we should steward the evolutions of our creations.
